Cambrai, Battle of, 1917

I have slightly altered the phrasing. Cambrai was the first successful operation of this type on such a large scale, but there had been some smaller successful operations as a precursor. This is explained in the article. The general opinion is that the initial success was cancelled out by the German counterattack, resulting in the status quo ante being restored and a roughly equal amount of territory being taken. Although Germany inflicted a defeat on the British in the second phase of the battle, she did not secure a nett increase in territory held, merely recovered the ground lost.Hengistmate (talk) 12:09, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
