sin city in 1950
[edit]This page:
http://www.geocities.com/gueroperro/Chron-45.htm
says:
Calumet City, Ill - has reputation of being sin capitol of America.
Any truth to this claim?
I lived in the area during the 1950s and for a year or so I delivered telegrams from the Western Union Office on State Street in Hammond, Indiana, which was located just a block from the State Street district of Calumet City just across the state line. I sometimes delivered telegrams to persons living in living units in this very seedy bar joint area of Calumet City, mostly women that probably worked in the seedy bars. Even as a high school student, it was well-know to me that this part of Calumet City had a large area reputation for decadence: B-girls employed by the bars would hustle patrons to purchase them watered down drinks; and the area was heavily populated with prostitutes. Even in the daytime, it seemed a scary place to be, and I always dreaded going there to deliver a telegram. We lived in Munster, Indiana, the town just south of Hammond. A woman down at the end of our block had a husband who was an alcoholic and from time to time she would enlist my dad's help in finding her husband in one of the bars in Calumet Cityand to help her to drag him home. ----
copyvio concern?
[edit]There is a large section of text apparntly copied into this article from the "Calumet City Community Guide". This may well be a copvio. Does anyone have the time to rewrite it? (and is it really needed here anyway?) Inner Earth 22:18, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'm removing it. It was copypasted from the cited reference ([1]). Even if we're legally able to use it, the tone is inappropriate. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:09, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
How far away from Chicago?
[edit]It would be very informative to know how far North of Chicago Cal City is, thanks. Maikel 09:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Calumet City is south of Chicago. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.91.248.249 (talk) 17:50, August 30, 2007 (UTC)
