Technically speaking, the southern border of Kansas is at the 37th northern parallel of latitude, and the southernomost portion of Illinois lies just south of that parallel.

Irrelevance of historical incidents

[edit]

While I would not object to a few sentences about the general transportation history of the area, the details in the current first paragraph of the History section don't really seem relevant to the bridge itself. The bridge was built well after slavery was outlawed; no connection is purported between the steamship disaster and the building of the bridge, and even Twain's remarks on the region are unconnected with the bridge itself.
