- The Gascon is not a French Basque dialect. On paper it's the westernmost Occitanian dialect. Its relationship with the Basque area is historical, from the time of the late Antiquity and the Dark Ages: Gascony and the Basque Country are both named after the tribe of the "Vascones" (the English language doesn't tell apart Basque and "Vascon", using the term Basque for both). It's the same case as Scotland (named after the Irish tribe of the Scotts), France & Franconia(after the Franks), Burgundy (Burgundians),Lombardy ("Longobardi"), Saxony, Essex, Wessex and Sussex (Saxons), England ("Angli"), etc. It is said that the Basque settlers in Aquitany adopted, modified or created a Latin-derived language that was to be the Gascon. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.142.175.22 (talk) 09:33, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Once again: it's a Gascon etymology
[edit]The French cadet comes from the Gascon Capdel (chief, petty chief), in turn from the Latin capitellum. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.8.98.118 (talk) 13:20, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
