Notable doctoral students

[edit]

Notable doctoral students include those found on this list of Elected Fellows of the IMS. [1] This list does include Radha Laha, but does not include some of those notable students listed. The list at [2] is a list of "some of the notable" deemed notable by the C. R. Rao Institute at the University of Hyderabad Campus. It is not necessarily inclusive or an objective list of the most notable students of C. R. Rao, who can be identified by their awards, impact, publications, etc. Evidence supporting exclusion of Laha should be a list from an international body. Mathstat (talk) 19:05, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vardhan is an Abel laureate, Parthasarathy is one of founder of Quantum Stochastic Calculus, Varadajan and Basu are also world famous. Laha is no doubt notable but not compared to these people. Also C. R. Rao is P.hd advisor of 50 people, we cannot include everyone. Solomon7968 19:12, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Laha is world famous for his work in characteristic functions and probability theory. There is no reason to exclude him from this list and the notability of a researcher is not determined by one single institution, regardless of its reputation. Not asking to include all 50, only those that can be identified by external sources that they are indeed notable. That requirement is met. Show evidence that he is not. Mathstat (talk) 19:18, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alternately do not name any notable students and say there are over 50 and provide a link. There is no ranking in notability, it is a yes or no category in Wikipedia. Mathstat (talk) 19:21, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is fine then, no need to argue on silly matters, but I requested you to make the articles on the red links of Gopinath Kallianpur to which you have not responded. I assume you are a Indian. Instead of arguing we can work for representation of Indian contributions to wikipedia. Solomon7968 19:25, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Awards and Medals

[edit]

Removal of Sardar Patel award

[edit]

This listing was added by an unknown user in Nov, 2015, and had remained in the article since even without a citation.

Sardar Vallabhai Patel Foundation is a private charitable trust.

Here is its mission statement from its website:

"To generate a corpus fund for purchasing 3-5 acres land in NCT of Delhi for the purpose of building a suitable memorial, a comprehensive library, a photography exhibition, meeting/conference rooms, auditorium, research center, etc. in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel."

That alone should suffice for the removal of this award from the listing. Nothing about this organization is related to mathematics or statistics either, nor it is a reputed or recognized organization in India known for giving away awards to eminent persons.

There are also enough reasons to suspect that the addition was done to advertise their organization, especially when another article called Orders, decorations, and medals of India dedicated to the Indian Honours System was also edited to add their awards in a separate category! There is also a back-link to the Indian Honours System Wikipedia article in one of the Facebook posts of the organization in question (I am not sure if I can link the Facebook post here).
