Burnaby Central opened in 1958 as Burnaby Central High School, with an enrolment of 717 students in Grades 10 and 11. It was constructed at a cost of $966,058.15. Principal was Mr. J.S. BURTON and Vice-Principal was Mr. J.V. BORELLI. A later addition provided accomodation for both Junior and Senior High students in the Central Burnaby area and accomodated 1500 students. The first class of 220 students graduated in 1960 and First Class President was Ed YEWCHIN. The second class of 242 students graduated in 1961 and their Class President was Brian BENTZ.
In 2010, both the 1960 and 1961 grad classes celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their Graduations. Over 150 students attended this 50th Reunion, noting that 53 had passed away.
As of 2010 a new Burnaby Central is being constructed on the present site and the old school is to be torn down. $50 million dollars is budgeted for the construction of the new school, which began in August 2009. The school will eventually enroll 1300 students and is scheduled to be completed in September of 2011. Mr. Roberto BOMBELLI is the current principal (2010).
