Bryan did not step down from the leadership of the union because of the defeat over British Telecom, he did so due to illness. This illness was also one of the factors which prevented him from standing as General Secretary of the Labour Party.
It is also incorrect to suggest that Bryan was against the left in the Labour Party. On many issues, especially given the policies of the Labour Party in 2009, Bryan held more radical views (he was for instance, pro-environment during the early 1990s long before such a stance became popular with other Labour figures). Furthermore, I would often debate 'left-wing' issues with him and we would sometimes agree and sometimes agree to disagree. So, rather than being against the left Bryan fought the battle against the infiltration by the Militant Tendency into the Labour Party.
Bryan's leadership of Hertsmere Council was inspirational. His greatest achievements were the film studios (as mentioned) and also in taking the money from the enforced privatisation of the council housing stock (under the previous Tory council) and ensuring that this money was spent on projects for the people, especially in the town of Borehamwood (which had the highest density of former council houses). From this he gave the town state of the art leisure and entertainment facilities.
