A Wiki Letter to Journalists

[edit]

I have listed below a few questions I was not able to answer while writing this article. They are not all that interesting but hopefully they will provide a guide for you in your research, if you are in fact a journalist working this subject.

  • How entrenched in science were Bruno's early years? Anecdotal evidence (sans satire) would be an excellent way to illustrate those years.
  • How did Maddox land the book reviewing jobs at The New York Times and The Washington Post. His Washington Post book reviews first appear on 1/23/1994 and his New York Times book reviews first appear on 7/17/1994. There is one lone book review in The Independent appearing 05/08/1995. Is there an interesting story here or not?
  • What is the name of the IT company that Bruno worked for and what kind of work did he do there? Was it some kind of web zine?
  • In the RTE.ie interview Maddox says that he "talked [his] way into Spy Magazine, which was a sort of American Private Eye." How did he specifically manage to secure the job. He hints that his scathing book reviews were a help.
  • It is interesting to note that Bob Guccione Jr. (aka the Gooch) founded GEAR magazine and also now owns Discover magazine, which might partially explain how Maddox got a monthly column there.
  • What happened to the film adaptation of My Little Blue Dress Maddox was working on?
  • A characteristic of Maddox's writing can be gleaned here by an angry reader, mentioning how Maddox has a fondness for using his name in clever adjectival forms like "brunomaddoxish" in SPY magazine and "brunomaddoxy" in My Little Blue Dress.

To do

[edit]
  • Get public domain photograph of Bruno Maddox
  • Fix Infobox Writer so that it can distinguish siblings from parents.done by others. thanks-BillDeanCarter 09:28, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wikify a little more
  • Properly format all citations
  • was it just one book review in The Independent or was it 3, or,5 or?? or? wht was it?!?only one book review in the independent.
  • to refer to Nature as a scientific journal, a magazine, a science magazine? which is most professional?
  • add some quotations on the critical acclaim it received.. particularly from the Salon.com review.
  • Read interview w/ Maddox, mentioned on this website, in Details magazine's May 2001 issue on p. 88. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BillDeanCarter (talkcontribs) 09:03, August 23, 2007 (UTC).

Fair Use

[edit]

I understand that Free us better than FU, but in this article, wouldn't it be reasonable to use a picture of him as FU?--SidiLemine 13:05, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I had a fair use photo, but it was deleted. IT was a recent one from the national magazine awards ceremony. It actually wasn't all that good because it didn't have enough pixels. I figure over time a public domain one will surface on Flickr.-BillDeanCarter 13:08, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you want this to go FA, I would advise you provide a picture, free of FU.--SidiLemine 13:42, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When I tried for the Aaron Sorkin article it became a big issue. Since then I avoid all fair use photos unless they're book covers or movie posters. And even then I mostly let others add them. There aren't that many good fair use photographs of Bruno Maddox out there anyways.-BillDeanCarter 13:45, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
True. I didn't find but this one.--SidiLemine 13:49, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This one is most recent but doesn't have enough pixels for the Infobox.-BillDeanCarter 13:54, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And I uploaded the low-pixel count portrait of Maddox from the national magazine awards and it was quickly deleted without warning. Hopefully something will surface on Flickr.-BillDeanCarter 00:51, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blue Dress

[edit]

The novel seems notable. Why not have a separate article on it? Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:53, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One day when there are academic papers on My Little Blue Dress and all kinds of publication details, and noted themes, then there could be a separate article. At the moment a separate article can't be justified. But this is a good start.-BillDeanCarter (talk) 23:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Featured Article with missing picture?

[edit]

If I was new to WP I would think that the article wasn't done. I'm surprised that this made the cut as a featured article, it seems like it either should have a picture, or not have the spot for the picture. I've never read the criteria for what's good enough for feature article, but picture seems to be a big deal. IMHO. Jimaginator (talk) 19:14, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I'd suggest raising it at talk of WP:FA.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:32, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We prefer to shame the living into providing one. That's why we have put up a silhouette of a male head in the Infobox. But also, it's not a requirement for FA.-BillDeanCarter (talk) 22:23, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, it worked.-BillDeanCarter (talk) 23:04, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

thank you!Jimaginator (talk) 23:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How did we get the picture? Did someone send one in? Raul654 (talk) 18:29, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aha. Looks like it was uploaded (in uncropped form not shown in this article) by User:Radosh, who is presumably Daniel Radosh - a colleague of maddox's from The Week. Raul654 (talk) 18:41, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FA in need of review

[edit]

This Featured Article on a living person was promoted in 2007 and has never been reviewed since.

The article is badly out out date:

  • "As of 2009, however, no manuscript has been forthcoming.";
  • "... as of 2007 continues to contribute weekly to the print issue";
  • "As of 2007 there is no further evidence that Maddox completed the script."
  • "As of 2009 a second novel from Maddox has not been published, however, in a story (dated 16 October 2009) by Bruno Maddox it is written that "Bruno Maddox is at work on his second novel.""

This biography is so obscure that no one bothered keeping it updated since the nominator was blocked way back in 2009. A lot of the sources are extremely close to the subject, such as the subject's own writings, interviews or the subject's direct employers. Refs 33 and 34 do not mention Maddox and ref 3 just lists his name among dozens of others. Wired just mentions him once in an article about someone else. I'm not seeing enough on Maddox to support an FA on him. RetiredDuke (talk) 00:26, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
