Cheers

[edit]

One of the more remarkable things about Bruce Smith's career in Buffalo was to hear the home-game cheers after a sack. For an outsider, it sounds like they're booing, but they were all saying "Bruuuuuuce!" It must have been unnerving to QBs.

Could someone please get a picture of him?Andrew zot 03:54, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating

Met him, great guy

[edit]

I met Bruce at a fundraiser for Boy Scouts on Mar 25, 2009. His big theme was that we must take care of our youth as they are the future; whether it's through sports, Scouts, church, or whatever. He gave great credit to his high school football and basketball coaches, who were both in the audience. This date was after he was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame but not yet inducted.RlevseTalk 22:33, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 14 May 2019

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Move. !Votes were close, but I strength of argument I find a rough consensus that this subject is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Cúchullain t/c 15:07, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

– The defensive end is the primary topic for “Bruce Smith” based on page views. The next closest is the musician who has about 1/10th of the page views as the defensive end Mrbeastmodeallday (talk) 05:50, 14 May 2019 (UTC) Mrbeastmodeallday (talk) 05:50, 14 May 2019 (UTC)--Relisting. Cúchullain t/c 13:40, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In this case, I think so. I admit to knowing nothing about American football, so I confess I've not heard of this person before today. I also note that Bruce Smith (American football) redirects to the other American footballer. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 16:23, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing that out, I've fixed the incoming links to Bruce Smith (American football) and retargeted it to the dab page. It was merely a leftover from an old page move. PC78 (talk) 19:40, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. The existence of other people with the same name doesn't preclude one from being the primary topic. Calidum 14:28, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as primary topic per page views and not countra-indicated by historical significance. -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:00, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Far too many names on the DAB page, and the defensive end is unknown outside USA. Making him WP:PTOPIC is a guaranteed way of accumulating bad links-in which are unlikely to be found and fixed and which will degrade the encyclopaedia. Narky Blert (talk) 16:17, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support... I count 71% of views for this article. And I consider the amount of articles irrelevant. WP:PRIMARYTOPIC to me. --Quiz shows 21:56, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Bruce who? Certainly not the overwhelmingly most notable person with this name. Remember, most of us in the world do not follow (or indeed, have any interest in whatsoever) American football. Some sportspeople are household names even for those who do not follow the sport; he is not one of them. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:06, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and nom, and I'm baffled by the opposition here, that seems to be applying imaginary criteria in determining primary topic. Second criteria not mentioned? Too many other notables for any one to have primacy? Not instantly recognizable household name throughout the English-speaking world? Current setup makes it easy to spot incorrect incoming links? Not the overwhelmingly most notable person with this name? None of these hurdles are policy-based criteria for determining primary topic, and arguments based on them should be discounted accordingly by the closer. --В²C 18:29, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
