Overlap
[edit]I stumbled upon this page and noticed that it first depicted brokerage firms as solely stock brokers, edited that. However, after doing further review I'm a little baffled by why this page exists as its own rather then as a subsection of the broker page? For now I just added Brokerage firm as a See also for broker, but will wait for further comments here to see if I may be right. I've only just begun my Wikipedia adventure so any more senior advice would be much appreciated. Virtuscience (talk) 02:15, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Virtuscience
Clarification about which "commissions" are reduced with Discount brokers
[edit]At least as of a certain [current or "recent"] version, the text in the second bullet of the "Discount brokers" section, ended with the phrase "thus reducing commissions".
Shouldn't that be clarified? The entire paragraph about block trades (including the two bullets) refers to "ways to lower costs for these brokers" (meaning, Discount brokers). IMHO, the meaning here of the phrase "thus reducing commissions", is, "thus reducing commissions payable to others by the brokerage firm". (right?)
Of course, any "lowering of costs for these brokers" (Discount brokers) could lead, indirectly, to reduced commissions charged by the brokerage firm, to its customers. However, IMHO this paragraph -- which introduces (and/or explains) the idea of block trades -- should clarify [first] which costs are the ones that can be directly lowered by such an idea.
Of course, the article could then go on to point out (later) that lowering of the costs for these brokers ("Discount brokers") is one way to enable Discount brokers to charge cheaper prices (commissions) themselves. (But if that is so obvious that it goes without saying, then it would be fine with me, to leave that part unwritten ["implied"].)
IMHO the paragraph about block trades should be changed, near the end of the second bullet, where it says "thus reducing commissions", to say "thus reducing commissions payable to others by the brokerage firm".
Any comments or advice could be welcome. :-) --Mike Schwartz (talk) 19:47, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
Wire house
[edit]Should "wire house" or "wirehouse" redirect here, or is there a distinction? To be more specific, was ever a distinction historically speaking?64.186.47.170 (talk) 07:55, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
