Date acquired by Teradata
[edit]Watch out for incorrect dates on its acquisition by Teradata. Even the Teradata site says that ShareBase/Britton-Lee was acquired in 1985, but this is incorrect. I worked there in 1989 and it had not been acquired at that time. But more formally, information published at that time points to a 1990 acquisition date:
- News stories in the SJ Mercury discussing its financial woes in late 1989 mention nothing about Teradata.
- One article I cited from 1988 discusses Teradata and Sharebase/BL as two separate companies.
- FORM 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission dated March 31, 1989 says nothing about Teradata; does discuss an agreement with investment firm Sutro to assist in raising private capital.
- I believe the article that I cited for the June 1990 date is the most likely accurate; I can't find anything that looks more reliable.
It is possible (although I can't find anything to confirm it) that Teradata bought a partial interest in BL/Sharebase earlier, maybe as early as 1985, which could lead to that confusion, but I can't find anything that clarifies that. Elf | Talk 17:19, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
I have some ShareBase documentation
[edit]...but not much that I've found so far. I pulled some info from the "ShareBase I Technical Overview, with original publication date of 1988 and updated Feb 25, 1989. It discusses various capabilities and features, but often in a vague way and much is missing (e.g., gives some specs for the 300 that it didn't bother to mention for the 700). If anyone wants to mine for more, I could probably copy some pages for you. Elf | Talk 23:55, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Critically aclaimed RDBMS
[edit]The combination of Britton-Lee's IDM hardware with Signal Technology Inc (STI)'s Omnibase/SmartStar software was the winning combination, and since Britton-Lee's IDM isn't event mentioned, let alone STI's software, I'm adding in this pre-1989/pre-1990 (see above re dates) info.
