Requested move 24 December 2014
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: not moved. Editors on both side cited WP:COMMONNAME as the reason for the move, but only the opposers produced evidence to back up their claim. In cases where there is a recent name change, evidence for COMMONNAME can be misleading as it may include usage of the name before the change. However, as Redtigerxyz demonstrated, BMC is still used by the Indian media, even after the name change. Some editors noted that the proposed name is the official name, but Wikipedia naming policy dictates that the common name is more important than the official name. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation → Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai – Move to its official name. BMC is the former name, Bombay Municipal Corporation Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:13, 24 December 2014 (UTC) --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:13, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
SupportOppose Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is better described as a brand name "Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation" would the official name, as shown by the 439 Google Book hits[1]. That being said Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is clearly the common name with "Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai" -wikipedia produced 4,610 hits[2].--Labattblueboy (talk) 19:46, 25 December 2014 (UTC)- I am changing my vote to oppose. As noted in my some of my comments below the official name of the corporation in legislation is Mumbai Municipal Corporation or The Municipal Corporation. Further search results in media appear to show that to show that "Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation" is a more common name. In English, "Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation" received 4,430 Google news hits[3] while "Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai" received only 613 hits[4]. "Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation" doesn't produce the same number as google book hits but at 2210 hits[5] it's sufficiently close for me to believe it's more common in regular parlance and is potentially increasing given the news hits.--Labattblueboy (talk) 23:27, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
- Support New official name and as per WP:COMMONNAME. Clearly Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is more notable and common. Thanks, ƬheStrikeΣagle 16:39, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- Comment @Labattblueboy: MCGM is not a brand name. It is the official name. Please check the website. Even street signs in Mumbai use MCGM as the abbreviation. Here is an example, where it is abbreviated to MCGM. Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation is a transliteration of Brihanmumbai Mahanagar Palika, which is the Marathi name. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 19:23, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not entirely convinced that it's the official name given multiple ways of translating the name, that being said it's irrelevant as Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is clearly the common name.--Labattblueboy (talk) 20:31, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- If the website and legal documents clearly state Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, what convincing is there to be done? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:36, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
- Here is a tender document that clearly states Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:56, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
- Which legal documents? There are none sourced nor included here that use the proposed name. The act (dubious secondary source I might add) listed in the article clearly states that it's the Mumbai Municipal Corporation or The Municipal Corporation. Show me an English set of the letters of incorporation from a government source and then we are talking. That tender document means nothing as I noted earlier it's a choice in translation.
I don't understand why you're pushing the point given I'm in support but to each his own I suppose.--Labattblueboy (talk) 15:00, 29 December 2014 (UTC)- @Labattblueboy: I don't understand your flawed rationale here. Where has it been called as the Mumbai Municipal Corporation? The link I gave you, which ironically, you are calling Dubious and Secondary, is of the MCGM itself. Here is another document hosted on the website of the COnsumer Grievance Redressal Forum of the BEST [a unit of the MCGM] which refers to it by the name that I have mentioned. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 19:47, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Rsrikanth05: It's called Mumbai Municipal Corporation in the acts of incorporation.--Labattblueboy (talk) 23:27, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

- My apologies, the original act was the City of Bombay Municipal Act, 188. This eventually became the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888 (via Maharashtra Act in 1996) and subsequently Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888 although it is still commonly cited Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act as dictated in the act itself.[6] Far as I can tell it still functions under that name.[7] As stated earlier, there is no indication that the proposed name exists in legislation and is consequently a brand name, not a legislated one.--Labattblueboy (talk) 14:15, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose WP:COMMONNAME remains BMC. - I have no clue why the media refers to it as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. It has never been called that. It went straight from Bombay Municipal Corporation to Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The Marathi name has always remained Brihanmumbai Mahanagar Palika. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 16:46, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

- Though WP:OFFICIAL name is MCGM. Common name on streets on Mumbai is BMC. More evidence of Common name of BMC: * Google Trends. The site also shows news headlines that generally use BMC or Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
- Google books 8,370 results for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC (the acronym BMC is preferred than the full form) v/s 6,030 results for "Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai" OR "MCGM" Redtigerxyz Talk 18:36, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
- Support as proposer. Most other Municipal bodies, say Chennai and Coimbatore use the official name in their title (Corporation of Chennai and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation as opposed to the Common names of Chennai Corporation and Coimbatore Corporation or Corporation of Coimbatore. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 16:50, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
- Support as per nomination and the editors stated above about common name. In fact Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is more notable as compared to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation even the official website has mentioned about Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. — CutestPenguinHangout 12:03, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
- Support per nomination. While argument for WP Common name is understandable, the encyclopedia must represent facts accurately. The url of its site is http://www.mcgm.gov.in/.AshLin (talk) 01:17, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Support – The proposed title is simply better, for one thing, because it is in complete English, per WP:UE]. It is also more common, as described in the above arguments. RGloucester — ☎ 18:31, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Move to Muncipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai
[edit]Brihanmmumbai Municipal Corporation isn't the legal name nor has it ever been the legal name... There hasn't been an entity named Bombay Municipal Corporation in a long time... At least not to my knowledge The Pillars on the Gateway of India also show MCGB aka Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay which was its former name before ther city was renamed
BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation or Bombay Municipal Corporation is the popular name but the legal, official name is Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai where I believe this page must be moved!
Thanking you and inviting support for this, 10:21, 3 February 2017 (UTC)NUMWARZ
- This is because it was called the Bombay Municipal Corporation until 1947. From 1947-1995, it was the Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay (MCGB), because Bombay was expanded to include areas up to Mount Poinsur (Dahisar). It has since then, been called the MCGM after the name change to Mumbai. However, a lot of structures in the city are still from the British-era, and have the letters "BMC" inscribed on them, including the Municipal Corporation Building, Mumbai, the head office of the MCGM. Thus, the B was simply changed from "Bombay" to "Brihanmumbai", which is also the Marathi word for "Greater Mumbai". Anonymousboii (talk) 10:40, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
