I find the whole Coronation Stakes/Westbury Stakes saga confusing. The Coronation Stakes was run at the Sandown April meeting, on the same card as the Whitbread Gold Cup. Its place in the calendar is now taken by the Gordon Richard Stakes. The Westbury Stakes was run at the Sandown late May Bank Holiday meeting, and its place in the calendar is now taken by the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. Yet I find that in these articles that the Coronation Stakes is seen as the predecessor of the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and the Westbury Stakes as the predecessor of the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. So in time they seem the wrong way round. The Westbury Stakes was won by Brigadier Gerard in 1972 and on the equivalent day the next year (1973) the Brigadier Gerard Stakes (or was it the Westbury Stakes) was run, though at Kempton as Sandown was closed for modification. I'd love to see some racecards from 1973 because I'm far from convinced by this story.(Victor Middlesex (talk) 04:52, 21 July 2014 (UTC))
- Interesting one, this and very difficult to find anything online. They must have switched the fixtures around at some point - by the mid-1980s the Westbury was definitely being run on the Whitbread card - I've got the Sporting Life Flat Results in Full for 1986, and that shows the Westbury at the Whitbread meeting, won by Supreme Leader. I don't have anything earlier than that though. First time I attended the Whitbread meeting was 1988, and it was certainly the Gordon Richards by then.
- The 1973 Westbury Stakes at Kempton was run on 28 May 1973 according to the newspaper image in the references section from the Gordon Richards Stakes while the 1974 race was run at Sandown on 27 April 1974 (Whitbread day). I have linked the two images here for convenience - 1973, 1974. The Brigadier Gerard appears on 27 May 1974 [1] but the 28 April 1973 [2]. I reckon they switched it around from 1974, moving the Brigadier Gerard to May and putting the Westbury to April Hope this all helps to clear up the tangled story!. --Bcp67 (talk) 11:22, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
