Appears to have passed away, but only one source
[edit]I've temporarily restored the previous version: there is currently only a single source, Edmonds Beacon, which provides very little additional information though it would be considered a reliable source. But it's better for Wikipedia to be slightly outdated than wrong and Edmonds Beacon provides very little additional detail. The only detail they give beyond what Wikipedia said is "Hanely had recently lived at the Motion Picture Country Home in Woodland Hills, Calif., and had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease." which they possibly knew already. We'd regret it if this turned out another case of WP:Citogenesis.
If it's true other news sources will pick this up soon enough. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:57, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
- Just found the source: Facebook. That's where the anons came from that edited our article. Also mentions the Alzheimer's, so it's safe to assume that's the source for Edmonds Beacon as well. Definitely need to wait. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 13:19, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
- Now parroted by The Hollywood Reporter with no apparent further research: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/bridget-hanley-dead-here-come-the-brides-1235064483/. The whole story still appears to trace back to that Facebook post by Ann Moses (no verified account) with a very blurry photo which was processed with Picasa that very prominently shows Ann's book. It very reasonably all could check out, but I think it's better to be careful with these matters. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 18:44, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
- This personally reeks of WP:OR. You're citing a Facebook post that came AFTER the IPs began editing the page as a means to suggest they're citing the Facebook post. That isn't the originating source on that end. There isn't sufficient evidence to support this doubt. Regardless, the Facebook post is by Ann Moses, former Hollywood editor at NME. She is the one breaking the news that she's passed away, and per the source had connections into Bridget's life. This makes the use of Beacons and THR sufficient to confirm death. - We report what is supported by reliable sources. It does seem like WP:OR to second guess the verification process used by various websites that are considered reliable sources for such information. I can see being more cautious if there were differing reports, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:56, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) We have to trust the fact-checking processes of sources we consider reliable. You're assuming the Edmonds Beacon and, in turn, The Hollywood Reporter, didn't corroborate the accuracy of the report of Hanley's death (whether from Facebook or otherwise) before publishing their articles. I'm extremely cognizant of the need for reliable sourcing in reporting deaths in BLP articles, but your (obviously good faith) doubts seem to be based on assumptions. The Edmonds Beacon has updated the story with a correction from Hanley's sister regarding Hanley having lived in the Ganahl-Hanley Log Cabin, so they're in touch with the family. -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 20:42, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

- We don't have a potential scandal on our hands, that rings of hyperbole. We edit articles in accordance to what is published in reliable sources. The Beacon and Hollywood Reporter are reliable sources according to community consensus. If those same sources post corrections, then we update our articles accordingly. The doubt here is based solely on your own assumptions and is essentially WP:OR.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:23, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

- Social media is the genesis of most death announcements nowadays anyway. What's important is that the announcement is coming from a) reliable sources via THR and Beacon and b) the social media post is by an individual that has knowledge about the welfare of the individual. Moses states she's in contact with someone who saw Hanley regularly. It's perfectly safe to include she has passed with what we have. By the way, Beacon provided an editors note to their report, where they specify they have spoken to her sister. So I feel this is a moot issue regardless. - That's you assumptions. THR wouldn't publish anything if there wasn't any merit to the initial report. As stated, Beacon has been in contact with her sister so this is all moot now. Rusted AutoParts 21:55, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

- I can confirm Edmonds Beacon based the initial article on the Facebook post and this tweet by Theatre West. I can also confirm they were contacted by the sister to correct the birth date and the occupants of the cabin. They were very helpful. Everything checks out, but it never hurts to be extra diligent with sensitive matters. Sorry I'd lost my cool for a bit above. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 20:14, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
