[edit]Apparently Pope Benedict XVI is credited with a desire to put an end to this agreement. It is difficult however to establish whether this wish has been effectively implemented. In any case the right of the French president to nominate in the cases of Strasburg and Metz remains.
Among the consequences of this method of appointment is the absence of bishops from certain sensitive regions being assigned to sees there (eg Britanny, Corsica) and the rather monochrome character of the French episcopate-there are no black bishops in mainland France----Clive Sweeting
