[edit]I don't think this falls into the category. I admit I did base the article on my own translation of the Croatian version of Gavella's biography as published on the theatre's website, and I used the English version for backing it up with in-line references, so it is not surprising that there are similarities between the two. I'm willing to re-write the article if somebody more experienced in these matters reviews the article and tells me what needs to be done. Timbouctou 09:03, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- The tagging of the current version is unwarranted, both texts are focused on factoids so their common content isn't really copyrightable, and the current text is not a mere paraphrasing. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 10:49, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have tagged the article as a close paraphrase of a translation of the Croation version of the biography (I had to rely on Google translate, but it appears fairly similar to the English version to me). I'm afraid that a translation of the copyrighted biography is still subject to the copyright protections on the original content, and so it must be used only for its facts and not for its language, just as any English source would be used.
- While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. The less creative the expression, the looser copyright applies, but even so close paraphrasing becomes a great concern when there are long passages that include fragments of the original and the structure of the original is retained. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism". - I re-wrote the article and included more sources. I believe it should be fine now. Timbouctou 05:13, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for rewriting it so promptly! I've looked over it and don't see any sign of close paraphrasing any more, so I agree that it should be fine now. Cheers. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:43, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
