german surname?

I looked in google books, and it looks like a English/Norsen surname:

"A dictionary of English and Welsh surnames" says that it means "the son of Brand" and that it went out of use before the XIII century (p. 129).
"A World of Baby Names" says it's a variation of "Brant", which derives "from the Old English brand (firebrand, sword) and the Norsen brandr (firebrand, sword)" (p. 30).
"A dictionary of English surnames" lists the variations Beand, Brandt, Brant, Braund, Brauns, Bront, says that it means "fireband, sword. Found also in Norway" (p. 61).

For the germanic origin, I can only find non-reliable websites[1][2].

Please kindly provide sources for the germanic origin instead of trying to edit war the "german surname" category into the article. --Enric Naval (talk) 23:19, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
