Environmental problems
[edit]User Dreambeaver introduced the lakes nutrient-richness as a subject. I have corrected a few misunderstandings and introduced the environmental problems of the lake and its nutrient-richness causes, especially of the past. These problems includes:
- Algae-explosions and following oxygen deprivation, fish death and ecologically collapse of the Bay of Aarhus.
- species deprivation of the formerly very rich biodiversity of the lake and surrounding area itself.
User Dreambeaver introduced a text about mud-pumping from the lake. I deleted it because the text was not elaborate enough. If this subject is to be introduced, it should as a minimum explain about all the reasons behind this costly and only partly successful project. There are several reasons:
- To postpone the natural mud-filling process of the lake.
- To remove some of the excess nutrients (especially phosphor and nitrogen).
- To improve the lakes natural nutrient conversion processes.
- To deepen the lake and attract a broader variety of species.
As a note, the nutrient excess, traces back to the intense agricultural activities and untreated waste water run-offs from settlements around the lake. These activities has almost stopped now and the agricultural practises has been replaced by low impact pasture farming on surrounding meadows. This implies that the nutrient density will decrease naturally with time.
It requires good references and I might provide them myself, when I find the time.
