Will bougainvillea grow in New Mexico? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.206.119.4 (talk) 21:43, May 9, 2006 (UTC (UTC)
- Why on earth would you want it too? All I can do after removing a bunch of them from my yard is cry, and say owghhhhh. and reminisce how I feel like I was in a slasher film.--Subman758 (talk) 19:45, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Colloquial meaning?
Isn't there also a slang meaning to the term bougainvilla? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.25.75.66 (talk) 13:42, July 4, 2006 (UTC)

Bougainvillea thorns
Are there any poision propeties in a bougainvilla thorn? I stepped on one recently and my foot sems to be infected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lstrauch (talk • contribs) 17:24, June 5, 2006 (UTC)
- A scratch or light puncture will normally bleed - which removes the irritant; so let it bleed. But stepping on a thorn jams it deeper; it might not bleed so treat it as an infection (topical antibiotic) FOR A DAY OR TWO. Then consult Doctor if it is still painful. - Those thorns are freaking tough. They go right though your shoes, and stab you.--Subman758 (talk) 19:47, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- Someone tried to get a good picture of the thorns, but the bush seems to give off radiation. You'd think there'd be more pictures, given they sell it as if it were a little plant, but it turns into a huge bush, dangerous it is to prune.

Treatment of bougainvillea in winter.
I have some bougainvillea bushes around my house in Southern Louisiana. The leaves grow black and fall off when we get cold snaps. Should I prune them or cover them to protect them in winter? They are fairly large shrubs, about 2meters wide and 1.5 meters tall (on average). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.228.9.3 (talk) 19:49, 7 December 2006 (UTC).
- Winter seems to be their season as I have 3 large 'tree'-size bougainvillea in Central Florida and you have to keep trimming them and don't let them touch your house. They are beautiful and a lot of work as they want to take over and climb like a vine. After 12 years, they are like a tree that you have to prop up, but very brilliant colors esp if you use 'bogain' as sold in Home Depot gardening section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.239.73.255 (talk) 23:45, November 3, 2015 (UTC)
Medicinal use?
Is there any medicinal use of leaves or flowers? I understand that taking few leaves in morning helps in blood pressure and blood sugar management — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.68.97.58 (talk) 08:19, April 25, 2007 (UTC)

Losing foliage
I live in Tampa, Florida. My Bouganvillea is about 7' tall and bloomed really good this year, but then began to lose its leaves as the flowers fell off. It looks like it is dying. I don't over water it. In fact, I don't think it has been on its own for several years and this is the best year that it has bloomed. However, now it looks bad. I also have a jasmin vine next to it that doesn't look so healthy either. What do you think could be the problem? Help. Mom wants to cut it down if I can't find the problem. Still the jasmin is blooming good this year. Confused. E-mail beeacub@yahoo.com Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.200.116.126 (talk) 16:26, June 9, 2007 (UTC)
- Answers
- I live in Logan City, Queensland ( Just between Brisbane and the Gold Coast) on the Eastern Australian Coast. We are experiencing the worse drought ever and our bougainvilleas are doing their best (despite the conditions.) The thing I like about bougainvillea is that all you have to do is make sure you cut then back after flowering. (They colour up better when its dry).t The thing I like about them is that they are pretty easy to strike from cuttings if you place a something over them (like half a 2 litre sift drink bottle to make a mini terriuam) and you make sure there is plenty of cambium exposed with either honey or rooting hormone power/gel covering the end of the branch that you hope to get the roots stricking from. I have seen an old bloke on the television who gets them growing from thick old hardwood cuttings by just sticking them in sharp sand without putting anything on the stalk and leaving them for 6 months plus. He's a bougainvillea genius but I still think making a green house is the best way to get them striking quickly.
- Our large bougainvilleas have lost a lot of leaves this year but we didn't cut them back. I think its best to cut them back vigorously when the bracks (the coloured leaves) have fallen off. This promotes new growth. The bracks seem to develop on the new growth. Cutting back also makes them thicken up. If you don't trim/hedge them they become untidy and throw out branches into the air like mad things. (Apparently they also like the same fertislisers that Hibcisus go for). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.186.47.33 (talk) 10:54, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Bougainvillea "tree" has fungus!!
Hi, I need help, we're renting a place in Sharjah, the U.A.E. It has three magnificent old bougainvillea trees, one is dead and there's a fungus growing from it's base. It looks like isolation foam! What is it? and how do I get rid of it. As i assume it will move on to the next tree pretty soon!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Birgitbdeboer (talk • contribs) 09:20, October 10, 2007 (edit) (UTC)

No Blooms
I planted a bougainvillea about one month ago. The blooms were beautiful. We had terrible wind for about four days. All blooms were blown off. I have good new growth, but not a sign of any more blooms. It's been this way for about two weeks. It receives plenty of sun, and I keep it moist--never soggy. Also, I have fertilized. Will the blooms eventually come back?68.158.164.133 (talk) 03:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- Assuming the plant dosn't die or something in the meantime, I'm sure it'll bloom again next year. :P --Marhawkman (talk) 09:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
picture caption
Babelfish translates the Japanese text [九重葛] on the pictures (at bottom of article) as "Kokonoe vine". Anybody got a clue what that means?--Marhawkman (talk) 09:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Kenya
It seems that in Kenya, bougainvilleas are plentiful and grow as vines and bushes. 208.39.169.122 (talk) 18:22, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Flammable?
An episode of Surviving Suburbia states that Bougainvillea is flammable. Is this true? If so, some mention of it should be made in the article. --Captain Infinity (talk) 00:26, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Other names
In Panama, where they are very common, they are called "Veranera". Aapold (talk) 06:05, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
