Demolition
[edit]I am not sure if it is true that listed buildings are going to be demolished for the Thameslink project. See this article [1] published on the Guardian website. It was published after a lot of sources that speak of the market's demise were published. I think it could be an idea to email Borough Market or Thameslink themselves to try to get information. - The problem is nobody bothers to {{cleanup}} the internet! Work will begin in Jan 2009 to build an additional viaduct into London Bridge. The former scheme meant the demolition of a number of listed buildings, including the Wheatsheaf PH (at that time, an unmodified Georgian boozer). The new scheme places the viaduct on piers to the immediate south of the existing viaduct. There appear to be no details on whether any demolition will take place, there will be considerable disruption to the market for up to three years. Where the viaduct passes there will be considerable modernisation of the market and it's certain that the character of the area will change. Some of this stuff was linked to the Shard - and with the difficulties in the financial markets, this now looks like not being built.
- Update: The best current information is that 20 grade II listed buildings will be affected - including the Wheatie, which will have its top floor removed for the viaduct to span the building. This seems to be upto date with respect to the current scheme. Kbthompson (talk) 18:39, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
