Untitled
[edit]I do not know how to do this but in category "Russian mathematicians" Boris Galerkin should be under "G" letter (not under "B" letter) since "Galerkin" is a family name, and "Boris" is a personal name.
This is now done. For future refrerence, the right way to do it is to append the category listing with a | and the way you want the listing to be sorted. Eg. [[Category:Russian mathematicians|Galerkin, Boris Grigoryevich]]

- I changed the code of the above, to match how I think it was intended to be displayed. (The original <pre> tags are now <nowiki> tags.) — AnnaKucsma (Talk to me!) 21:05, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Biography
[edit]I've added a biography, for Galerkin. The addition is an almost verbatim copy of http://smitu.cef.spbstu.ru/galerkin_en.htm. It is done with permission from the Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical University. Citing the aproval letter below
Dear Mr. Tom Frederik Blenning Klaussen, We don't have any objections for republishing materials from our web-site. The only request is to specify the sourse (to give a link for our web-site), if possible. Sincerely, M.S.Smirnov.

- There is no doubt the above contribution needs some cleanup. I'm going to try to improve the article over the next couple of days. Bfg 10:11, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Old and new style dates
[edit]July 23, 1906 [O.S. August 5] and March 13, 1907 [O.S. March 26] make no sense since the Julian calendar is SLOWER but not faster than the Gregorian calendar. Any available Russian speakers, please check the sources.--Jusjih 11:26, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- The error seems to be mine, I misunderstood the markup of the different dates in my sources. I'll fix it soon. Bfg 00:38, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Article title
[edit]Why is article titled as "Boris Galerkin", not "Boris Galyorkin"? Geevee (talk) 13:50, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- That is certainly a valid question and the answer is quite simple. Because the first page created was created with the name Boris Galerkin. If you wish to rename it, I have no objections, provided that you comply with the following points.
- 1. Leave this notice up for at least two weeks, so interested parties may have their voice heard before doing anything.
- 2. State clearly why this is in compliance with the Wikipedia naming conventions.
- Bfg 16:46, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- The both variants comply with Wikipedia romanization of Russian convention. The original ("Galerkin") can be considered as simplified, more familiar-looking, or easier to pronounce for English-speakers, and proposed variant ("Galyorkin") is just a romanization, without any exceptions. Anyway, I think that the original will be more suitable, because it is more common (check Google for Galerkin and Galyorkin). Thus, I think it will be better just to add redirect page Boris Galyorkin and leave article title as is. Geevee (talk) 17:07, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Seems like a sound decision. However I think your wording surname more accurately romanized as Galyorkin seems a bit awkward, so I thought I should propose different wording. I had a look at [[Category:Russian_mathematicians]], and went through the lettte A, and I find there is no appartent conformance to any style. I have no experience in transliteration, so I have some difficulties in assessing which style is the best, but I invite you to have a look through the category, and see if you can find a better way of saying there are other transliterations.
- I think it would be apropriate to point out that my specific reasons for finding this awkward is that it is too long and cumbersome. His name and birthrate takes almost a full line. Bfg 13:30, 13 January 2007 (UTC)!
