Formerly in County Sligo?
[edit]Recent edits have removed the (unsourced) sentence "Bonniconlon was previously within the bounds of County Sligo, when the Sligo border went as far as one shore of the Moy in Ballina". On investigation, I believe this removal was justified (albeit lacking elaboration in edit summaries or on Talk). The sentence was partly correct: the Sligo border did formerly extend to the Moy. But this did not, I believe, include the Bonniconlon area.
The county border redrawing took place under the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898. Three electoral districts/divisions (ED) were transferred from Sligo: Ardnaree North, Ardnaree South Rural and Ardnaree South Urban. If the ED boundaries have not changed then all three EDs are on the River Moy. But Bonniconlon is/was in Kilgarvan ED.
The site mayo-ireland.ie appears to be a scholarly resource for Mayo history. Their main Bonniconlon history page doesn't mention county boundaries, although covering those years. The site also includes an extract from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary (1831). It says: "...KILGARVIN, a parish, in the barony of Gallen, county of Mayo...". Kilgarvin has long been the (civil) parish/electoral division including Bonniconlon. And was formerly the village name.
Other resources mention/question Bonniconlon having been in Sligo, such as the Ireland Byways blog in their section on Bonniconlon. The blog seems well-researched but the county boundary issue could well be WP:CIRCULAR.
I'm leaving these notes both out of interest and in case the subject crops up again. Declangi (talk) 02:21, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
