The claim that diplomas were stamped in such a manner seems completely bogus / fabricated (also, no online images of such diplomas). Nobody would accept such a diploma and the claim that "oriental" students underwent a different type of studies is also unrealistic. There would have to be two different sections for each course? University professors in the 19th century wouldn't bother with such waste.

So, this is probably just an expression (looking online I found mostly Turkish and Greek sources) and I'm not even sure if it came from the French administration / society or if it's just a perception of people in the Orient about how western elites regarded them / or a way to characterize ideas, things and practices of lower quality).
