Merge
[edit]I agree that Bob Ferguson (baseball player) should be merged into Bob Ferguson (baseball). I wrote the former only because I didn't know that the latter existed.Carlo 03:02, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
I just did the merge, but I do not know how to delete the original page. Could someone do that? And is it still considered a stub? Carlo 03:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Nickname
[edit]I reverted a user explanation for Bob Ferguson's nickname ("because of his single career home run"). As far as I know, the reason for his nickname is unknown. A baseball blog named for him (http://www.deathtoflyingthings.blogspot.com/) says: "The origin of his unusual nickname remains a mystery, although most people believe it was because of his defensive prowess as an infielder. A more colorful explanation alleged that Ferguson liked to throw balls at birds prior to games."
He did have one career home run in the professional leagues. But 1) he was well-known well before that, and may well have hit more; 2) the home run was not the major deal it is today; 3) fans really didn't track statistics like they do now; and 4) most Home Runs were in the park, anyway. It sounds to me like as though the explanation for the nickname came from the statistic, not the actual nickname. Carlo 18:32, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
GA Review
[edit]Just a note that I'm finally getting around to reviewing this, should have something up tonight. So far I read the lead and it's good. I normally dislike cites in the lead, but I also see why those sentences would need them. Wizardman 16:44, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Now, the comments:
- Done*"Ferguson played for two of New York's most fabled semi-professional clubs...", and "This win brought to an end the fabled Red Stockings' 81 consecutive game": What do you mean by fabled? Seems like an awkward choice of words.
- Eliminated the word fabled, not needed.Neonblak (talk) 16:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Done*"The advantages that switch-hitting creates are such things as batting left-handed batters against right-handed pitchers, or vice-versa, which puts the batter in a better position to get a base-hit and help the team.": True, but seems out of place in this article. Reword to make it flow better or remove.
- Eliminated the sentence, placed there by peer review suggestion, awkward.Neonblak (talk) 16:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Done*"he was receiving loud, verbal abuse throughout the game by notorious umpire-baiter, Mutuals catcher Nat Hicks.": A statement like that would need to be cited.
- removed "notorious umpire-baiter", and added citation, most of that paragraph is from the same article.Neonblak (talk) 16:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Done*All quotes need to be cited (i see more then one that isn't).
- All quotations should now have an immediate ref. made a few wording and structural changes as well. Will take one final read through to fix any other needed changes.Neonblak (talk) 17:16, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- Done*Create articles for Al Thake and Art Hagan if you can. (I can do this if you wish, shouldn't be a problem)
- I'll put this article on hold; you'll have a week to fix what I found. Then I'll look over the article a second time. Wizardman 17:04, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
