Origin of name
[edit]we've got a seeming conradiction here.how can the term not have come into english until 1450, when there were officers with the title in 1040? even allowing for the changes in the language, this is confusing.sort it out, and look lively!Toyokuni3 (talk) 16:47, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- I did a quick patch-job; feel free to improve it. What bothers me more now is the repeated references to the British Royal Navy. The article is called "Boatswain's Mate (US Navy)", after all. I'm too tired to fix it now, and I doubt I'll even remember about this article in the morning, so someone please grab the reins before the article wanders off again. --MuséeRouge (talk) 03:41, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
No anchors
[edit]i wish i could think of a way to include a reference to the well known homophobic navy saying 'the only people who whistle aboard ship are boatswain's mates and queers, and i don't see any anchors on your sleeve'.Toyokuni3 (talk) 22:05, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Meaning of "mate"?
[edit]What is the origin and meaning of the "mate" part of the name? If there are Boatswain's Mates, are there plain Boatswains? 173.81.161.138 (talk) 19:13, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
