I am curious orange

[edit]

Aren't they sometimes yellow-orange, too? Trekphiler 17:37, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Painful Bite?

[edit]

Is their bite known to be painful? --99.159.6.120 (talk) 14:01, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't speak with authority except about the black flies that live in New England, but in my experience no, the bite itself doesn't hurt when it happens, but it becomes itchy soon thereafter. In this respect they're very different from horsefly/deerfly bites, which are quite painful. 206.208.105.129 (talk) 14:31, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

name

[edit]

Are these also known as Black Gnats? There is a town by that name, Black Gnat. Drutt (talk) 08:31, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Common names in other languages

[edit]

I think the section "Common names in other languages" should be dropped completely, since it does not conform to the standard of insect articles, and indeed not with wikipedia articles. The sidebar with links to other languages should be used for this. Atomicbre (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:24, 10 June 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Better photo needed

[edit]

The current and only photo is from a scanning electron microscope, and provides no clue as to what they actually look like. 208.97.124.178 (talk) 05:10, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
