CBC Radio
[edit]Bitter Sweet Symphony is used as the theme for the CBC Radio program "Tapestry". This should be included. 142.26.194.190 (talk) 16:15, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Lyrics
[edit]The lyrics are:
"He has got trousers on, yes he has, yes he has; He has got trousers on, yes he has, yes he has; He has got trousers on, yes he has, yes he has; He has got trousers on, yes he has, yes he has..."
And I can't remember the rest. I hope this helps. 77.96.122.131 (talk) 22:02, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
Which came first, the song or the sample?
[edit]A bit of uncertainty here - the wording of the article, saying that "Bittersweet Symphony" was "based on music from an Andrew Loog Oldham adaptation of a Rolling Stones song, 'The Last Time,'" implies that the sample came first and the song was constructed around it. But I've always believed that the song was recorded, mixed and considered finished BEFORE producer Youth listened through it, said he felt it needed something extra and suggested adding the string sample.
Any clarification on this? Tonythepixel (talk) 21:20, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Songwriting Credits
[edit]The article as it currently stands (15 October 2011) claims that the credited songwriters are Jagger and Richards. But other sources, such as this,http://www.scribd.com/doc/60317315/Bittersweet-Symphony claim that the credits are to Ashcroft, Jagger and Richards. This makes more sense, as it is not disputed that the lyrics are by Ashcroft. So can anyone find an authoritative source (by which I don't mean press articles or interviews) and give the correct position?109.157.227.44 (talk) 17:35, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- Allmusic lists (Keith Richards / Mick Jagger / Richard Ashcroft), and I think that since that site is a guide and not a periodical, that should work.
Ulmanor (talk) 05:13, 14 February 2013 (UTC)- BMI record:
- BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY (Legal Title)
- BMI Work #4057539
- Alternate Titles:
- BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY
- Songwriter/Composer Current Affiliation CAE/IPI #
- ASHCROFT RICHARD PAUL PRS 246059957
- JAGGER MICK PRS 15036916
- RICHARDS KEITH PRS 25969846
- Publishers
- ABKCO MUSIC INC BMI 56388746
BMI have now revised their Songwriting credits posting to simply list Richard Ashcroft as the sole songwriter (https://repertoire.bmi.com/Search/Search?Main_Search_Text=Bitter%20Sweet%20Symphony&Main_Search=Title&Sub_Search=Please%20Select&Search_Type=all&View_Count=0&Page_Number=0) Therefore I have revised the page to reflect this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dwohalloran (talk • contribs) 17:32, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Number of notes in the Verve's sample from Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of "The Last Time"?
[edit]Now, the Credits dispute section says the number of notes in the Verve's sample from Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of "The Last Time" is five. In fact, the sample in "Bittersweet Symphony" contains 13 notes (count 'em). Other sources state that one of Klein's objections was that the Verve had used more notes than they had a licence for. What is the truth? Please help. Robert P. O'Shea (talk) 19:35, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- OK. I listened again to Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version. Its riff contains five notes. The Verve added the other eight notes, as its members complained in the dispute. The guitar riff in the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" contains 10 notes. All three riffs share the same general form with that of The Staple Singers' "This May be the Last Time", as implied in the article. I doubt it is necessary to drag readers through all of this in the article. I thank you for your patience. Robert P. O'Shea (talk) 16:22, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- I don’t understand why everyone’s talking about the strings while the whole verse melody is almost identical to “The Last Time”. It’s basically the same song. 2001:9E8:94C:B800:552A:59F8:65EE:6650 (talk) 20:06, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Massive Attack
[edit]In the part about the music video, I added that Massive Attack members follow the singer in the Unfinished Sympathy video. @Popcornfud reverted it, saying: That isn't mentioned in the provided source, and it doesn't seem important for the point being made here.
It is important because the video for the song that is the subject of this article also shows the singer followed by other band members.
I am not going to start an edit war about this because I have better things to do. If anyone agrees with me, consider restoring it. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 10:40, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Clarification of credit dispute section
[edit]The Credit dispute section says the following (emphasis added): "The Verve negotiated rights to use the "Last Time" sample from the copyright holder, Decca Records. However, they did not obtain permission from the Rolling Stones' former manager, Allen Klein, who owned the copyrights to their pre-1970 songs, including "The Last Time"." It sounds like the article is making a distinction between the copyright holder and the copyright owner. Is it right to? Unfortunately, the articles cited in that paragraph don't clarify, because they don't mention Decca Records at all. Should it say that Decca and Klein both held different copyrights over the sample, one for writing and one for the recording? Should it say that Decca was wrongly believed to be the copyright holder? Should the part about Decca records be removed, because the sources cited don't support it? Should it say the Verve had the necessary permission from Klein for a sample from "Last Time", but not to the extent they used (but then why mention Decca)? Tim Ivorson 2024-09-09
- Thanks for flagging this error, which was probably introduced by me some time ago. It looks like I mixed up the sources here. I've replaced it with a reliable source that directly states the info about Decca Records, and attempted to clarify the distinction between the different types of copyright ownership. Hopefully it's clearer now. Popcornfud (talk) 10:32, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- That's much better. Thanks! Tim Ivorson 2024-09-10 19:10, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
