Is Birkenhead named after the Town across the mersey from Liverpool in England?

In her The Story of Birkenhead, Margaret McLure indicates on page 31 that Charles Heaphy probably named the land Birkenhead when he surveyed it, but it is not known what links he may have had with Liverpool's suburb.
