Style of opening
[edit]I do not wish to engage in an edit war with Surtsicna, but he/she should have a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies)#Opening paragraph. Start with a grammatical sentence. As to Woodzing's edit that I reverted, it does not sound good to repeat the first name, and "Birger Magnusson" is the normal way of referring to this person, also in books in English. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 18:30, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- Does putting the Swedish name in brackets solve the problem with a grammatical sentence? Somtimes, there is nothing wrong with repeating the first name - for example, when a German princess is referred to as Maria Theresa in English, her native native name (Maria Theresia) should certainly be mentioned, regardless of the fact that the first of the names is repeated. If you can prove that English language sources commonly refer to him as Birger Magnusson, I'll be happy to remove the Swedish name form. Surtsicna (talk) 20:41, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- A grammatically complete sentence requires a verb, right now there is none. As to English sources, this search on Google books returs many examples. Of course "king Birger of Sweden" is also frequently used. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 20:59, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
English name form
[edit]Magnusson does not conform to the article's title, is not his contemporary name (Birgerus Rex Sueciae), not genuine English (Manson) but Swedish as spelled, not a legitimate part of his official name as king, likely to be confused with his paternal grandfather's name (pre-Jarl), could be phonetically disturbing to a non-Swedish reader and, essentially important: not necessary. Any listing in English referring to this king as Birger Magnusson defers courteously and popularly to Swedish interests without considering those of a non-Swedish reader. Not the best policy in my opinion. Should be avoided. Readers of English on en.WP do not benefit from unnecessary Swedish lessons in articles not related to language. They do benefit from the absence of same and from a consistent usage of English-language name forms whenever possible. Added a reference to someone who knows how to write genuine English and is an expert on the subject matter.
The grammar of the sentence is totally irrelevant to the change I made and to the previous discussion segment - which more accurately could have been called "English name form" as this is - since grammar was not effected at all by the adjustment I made to his name in the interest of the smoothest possible English. That alteration was made in that regard only (that's what I am trying to improve all over, if I may). SergeWoodzing (talk) 02:18, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

The info box seems to be messed up since I moved the portrait image in there, and I don't know how to fix it. Anybody want to help? SergeWoodzing (talk) 14:14, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- Looking at the current version, and the versions before and after your edit, I can't say that I see a problem. Can you give more details on what you're seeing? Dori ☾Talk ⁘ Contribs☽ 22:40, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
- I've tried copying the information onto a different infobox, can you expand on your problem? -- Luke (Talk) 02:16, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
- On my screen, in any case, the first few headings aren't visible. Do you see them? "Preceded:" etc etc. SergeWoodzing (talk) 03:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
- Fixed with this edit. The template documentation doesn't make this very clear, does it? -- John of Reading (talk) 09:39, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
- No, thank you! SergeWoodzing (talk) 16:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
