HIV status

[edit]

I have noted Porter's HIV status in this article, based on a report in The Hollywood Reporter. I'd not usually treat them as a very reliable source, at least for breaking news, but Porter has linked to the article from his verified Twitter account, suggesting it is accurate. ◦ Trey Maturin 15:58, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Promoting racist views.

I find myself amazed that no one has called out the racism inherent in this statement: "The reason why our country is in the mess we're in is simply because of whiteness. White supremacy. White people choke-holding power and sucking the life out of humanity". If that isn’t a perfect example of a glaring double standard I really don’t know what is because you can swap out the words white for any other ‘race’ and it would be a totally abhorrent statement roundly condemned. If there’s a mess it’s because people can actually get away with making this kind of a comment. 96.246.137.168 (talk) 21:52, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you’re going to include racist language in an article by someone it needs to be identified and called our as such as it would in any other article. 96.246.137.168 (talk) 01:16, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Victim blaming much? Complaining about racism is not racism, whereas attacking those complaints is racism. Read and understand the concept of white privilege and its consequences. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 02:18, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Take those comments, change the language simply by flipping the word White to Black and it becomes abundantly clear what a completely racist statement this is. There are not two sets of rules no matter how much people want to believe there are. This is a wildly racist statement and should be called out as such. It’s not victim blaming at all, it’s holding everyone to the same standard when it comes to their views, you don’t get a pass because of skin color. Excusing this away is the same thinking that led to the genocide in Rwanda. Racism is vile and it comes in many forms, excusing away someone’s racism because you believe somehow they are justified because of a perceived grievance does not make it magically okay. This is a subjective comment by a performer and it is vile in nature and needs to be identified as such. 96.246.137.168 (talk) 04:09, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, racism exists everywhere/everyone, including from blacks against whites, but context is everything. This is the American situation, with a history of slavery, civil war, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and continued institutional racism in varying degrees at every level. Whites were and are the perpetrators and perpetuaters, and blacks are the victims. They should not be victim blamed when they complain.

Calling it "a perceived grievance" is a denial of all that history. It's a belittling and denial of the legitimacy of the justified grievances of blacks in America, and thus a tone deaf example of blatant racism. Why can't you accept Porter's complaint as legitimate and accurate? History tells us he's right. He has a right to point out the problem.

American whites have a huge burden of guilt for their treatment of blacks and other minorities and their failure to adequately make amends. Things are better now, but there is room for lots more improvement. Porter isn't manufacturing an illegitimate grievance. It's spot on and only racists and insecure white nationalists would take offense.

You can't come here and make such accusations against him and expect to not get called out for it.

White liberals and progressives try to understand these problems and try to improve the lot of the downtrodden. They don't like racism, and they seek to rid themselves of the consequences of the bad influences they were raised with in a racist society. Try to emulate that pathway forward.

Since this whole thread is not leading toward article improvement, it violates WP:NOTFORUM, so I'll hat it now. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 07:23, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
