Rename
[edit]I'm not sure how this would be done or what the new name should be, but in 2018, the center was renamed, dropping the Wildermuth, because of the racism of its namesake, Ora Wildermuth. - @Jkonrath: i believe it was actually simply renamed "Intramural Center" in 2018.[1][2] there is no article named "Intramural Center", so personally, i would have seen no problem moving the article to that name at the time.
- in any case, now that the facility has been renamed again, can anyone confirm whether the fieldhouse has been named "William Leon Garrett Fieldhouse" or "Bill Garrett Fieldhouse"?
- the source cited in the article, which was a report issued by the office of the president, appears to have been taken offline, but it had stated that the new name was "William Leon Garrett Fieldhouse".[3] the indiana daily student states the same.[4]
- however, indiana university's news release reported the new name as "Bill Garrett Fieldhouse".[5] in addition, the web page for the facility itself also refers to the building with the shorter name.[6]
- of course, i am aware that "Bill" is a shortened version of the name "William". my question is whether the facility was named with garrett's full name or with a shortened version of his name. i raise the point because if the latter is the case, then naming the article using garrett's full name would be incorrect.[a]
- @Froo: i thought i might ping you as you were the one who executed the move. dying (talk) 22:21, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- The sign out front says "Bill Garrett Fieldhouse" but the board of trustees report says "William Leon Garrett Fieldhouse" - See https://indianahq.com/indiana-officially-renames-campus-intramural-center-after-basketball-legend-bill-garrett/ --Jkonrath (talk) 22:28, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- interesting. i would have thought someone who had a picture of the sign out front would have provided dispositive evidence, but admittedly, i also had not read the president's report closely enough to realize that it was actually quoting the trustees' resolution verbatim. i am inclined to interpret this as meaning that the name is formally "William Leon Garrett Fieldhouse", but virtually no one calls it that, including itself. thanks for pointing that out and providing a source, Jkonrath. dying (talk) 22:50, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Notes
- ^ similarly, a person who has "Bill" as their legal given name should not be referred to as "William".
