Electric bass
[edit]How is the instrument (the electric bass guitar he had picked up) named on the record jackets from 1957 on? Badagnani (talk) 19:02, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
more than Rock n Roll
[edit]Since we have a flurry of activity ... Black was pretty darn successful with his Combo. The output there was pretty diverse. Anyone want to propose an addition to the InfoBox that might relect this? Consensus, please. Steve Pastor (talk) 21:39, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- Offhand, I can't think of a single non-R&R track I liked - except for the very wonderful Blue Tango. But how do you classify that? Just 'pop', I suppose. Rothorpe (talk) 23:30, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Close paraphrasing
[edit]This article contains content closely paraphrased from non-free sources, much of it from the book Blue Moon Boys. For one of the more extreme examples, consider the following content, added in this edit:
Black's early stage persona was that of the jokester coutnry bumpkin, and when he began playing with Soctty Moore, he blacked out his teeth, wore a straw hat and coveralls, needled the band leader, and played a malaprop-spouting hick for laughs.
The source says, at page 25:
Initially, Black's stage persona was that of the jokester coutnry bumpkin. When he began playing with Soctty Moore, he blacked out his teeth, wore a straw hat and coveralls, mercilessly needled the band leader, and played a malaprop-spouting hick for laughs.
Only a few words have been changed.
Some of the other examples of problematic content I've found are minor, but such issues add up to a concern as they multiply:
- [2]; p. 20 ("Most of these places were beyond the notice of polite middle class society....During that pre-television era, live music was a big attraction....")
- [3]; p. 133 ("He knew that Black had a definite vision for a simple, danceable instramental sound.")
- [4]; p. 148 ("Mainly, however, he wanted to stay home and concentrate on his business, family and his health.")
- [7]; [8] ("...a melody line he'd lifted from the group's flop of the previous year, "Is Your Love For Real?" which he had in turn borrowed from McPhatter and the Drifter's 1955 hit "What 'Cha Gonna Do?")
There may be other close paraphrasing I have not discovered.
While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. So that it will not constitute a derivative work, material that follows closely on copyrighted sources in language or structure needs to be rewritten from scratch. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".
Please let me know if you have questions about this. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:12, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
- Tagged for investigation. I believe this one is fixable by removing the close paraphrasing manually and then revedeleting. MLauba (Talk) 12:58, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
- Okay. I've cleaned the article and rewritten some of the text. Unfortunately the article was expanded early on with text copied from Richie Unterberger -- so I've eliminated that as well. And replaced the text copied directly from The Blue Moon Boys. I think it should be okay now. — CactusWriter (talk) 19:57, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
