Fifth line

[edit]

The reference to a fifth line passing through Biggleswade station contains an anomaly. The 'fifth' line referred to is actually the 'down' loop and it is via this line, accessed from the 'down' slow line, that Plasmor trains enter the sidings. This 'down' loop doesn't actually pass through the station but is situated a little to the south. There are no sidings whatsover on the 'up' side and haven't been for a good many years. It should also be noted that some of the faster stopping services, during the morning and evening peak hours, use the main line platforms at Biggleswade. Also, there were once two signalboxes at Biggleswade, Biggleswade South and Biggleswade North. The North box was closed in the early 1960s, it's functions being assumed by the South box until this itself was closed and demolished.
