Planetary romance

[edit]

I've either cut the "space opera" references, or change the term to "planetary romance," which seems a more apt category for the first book in particular. I also made a few tweaky stylistic edits and pointed the Showboat World references to a newish article on that book. (I think that article's title needs to be fixed, though--it isn't capitalized properly. Maybe in another session.) RLetson 21:40, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editions and Cover Scans

[edit]

I've added cover scans for what I believe to be the first abridged edition (Avalon, 1957) and the first full text edition (Ace, 1978). However, the text originally indicated the Ace double was first. I don't think this is correct as the List of Ace Titles in first DGS series lists the double as 1958. There is a 1957 Ace non-double. However, the bibliography in the Underwood Miller book indicates the Avalon edition as first. I've corrected the text accordingly. I had a similar question regarding the full text editions (the Ace vs the Underwood-Miller, both 1978). Jack Vance home page and archive lists the Ace first so I opted for that scan. I'll defer to anyone who has better bibliographical information.--Rtrace 22:37, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Name and size

[edit]

I've added a sentence to the first paragraph of § Plot summary, explaining how the planet can be immense (important to the "view 'vast beyond Earthly conception'" and the 40,000-mile route to Earth Enclave) but habitable. --Thnidu (talk) 16:35, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gevers' Comment

[edit]

Nick Gevers' comment about this novel apply to all of Vance's novels that I have read. The main character(s) are secondary to the societies and worlds in which these characters are embedded. I classify this as sociological SF. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:882A:0:914E:B65:6E91:2975 (talk) 21:16, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
