This whole article needs to change. Firstly, in general, people usually regard a bidiagonal matrix as one with entries only on the diagonal and superdiagonal (sometimes only the diagonal and subdiagonal) in which case it is not symmetric. It also seems inappropriate to have the article revolving around LAPACK rather than the actual mathematical definition!
If there are no objections, I will rewrite this in the next few days. (I will leave references to LAPACK intact, however they will be ancillary to the main article.)

A rewrite was needed which I took a shot at. The definition supplied was wrong and no decent reference was supplied. The references to LAPACK and quantum physics seemed extranenous, but maybe could be worked back in. Jlenthe (talk) 01:15, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
