It needs to be included in the Angular Anomalies section and Circumstellar Dynamics. Also it shows a Teff of 3,600K which could have an important bearing on our luminosity calculations. --Sadalsuud (talk) 15:53, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely relevant, but being a recent article, you have to pay for it to read it. The Abstract reports "The diameter of Betelgeuse (α Orionis) has been measured at a wavelength of 11.15 μm using the Infrared Spatial Interferometer over the past 15 years. During this 1993-2009 time period the star's size has decreased systematically by 15%." Sadalsuud (talk) 05:22, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
weird thing is, I thought it would have the velocity in there which someone has put in the article...unless I am nbot 'getting' something..? Casliber (talk · contribs) 01:04, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is probably the most important article in regards to the angular diameter (size) of Betelgeuse as it catalogs 17 years of measurements from 1993 - 2009. No other researcher/paper has ever been able to report something like this, as they all represent measurements at a static moment in time. Sadalsuud (talk) 20:49, 8 August 2010 (UTC) Abstract: ADS. I read the abstract and it seems too technical for the scope of this article on Betelgeuse. More importantly, being a recent article, readers will have to subscribe to another service to be able to access it, which limits its usefulness. Very Interesting, but like all new articles, one must pay for it to read it. Here's the conclusion from the Abstract: "These convective motions will generate turbulent pressure, which will strongly decrease the effective gravity. We suggest that this decrease, combined with radiative pressure on molecular lines, initiate the mass loss in red supergiant stars." It can be found here: ADS. Frustrating - seems to indicate data for Betelgeuse is somewhat conflicting and points out the B. is one of the least variable RSGs in the sample. Nice conclusion in general about high velocities as a candidate for mass loss. Casliber (talk · contribs) 01:03, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could be quite useful in the Circumstellar Envelope subsection as it actually comes up with an actual size of the envelope using a "television detector" Interesting quote: "This emission has been traced out to a minimum radius of 29 arcsec (about 600 stellar radii)" Also, "We have extended direct observatin of the gas shell surrounding Betelgeuse to radii of 14" to 29". It is worthwhile considering the probable extent of this shell. At a distance of 190pc — the distance of Betelgeuse (Weyman 1962) — a diameter of 60" corresponds to 11,000 AU, or 65 light days. At a constant expansion velocity of 10 km s (Whyman 1962), the outermost neutral potassium observed would have been ejected 2700 years ago". Sadalsuud (talk) 04:33, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
