Domesday folk

[edit]

The WP entry for Richard de Tonbridge (presumably the guy who owned the castle) redirects to Richard fitz Gilbert ("Not to be confused with Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare"). But those entries don't mention a Robert fitz Gilbert, referred to here. I am not expert enough to disentangle this. Can anyone clarify that Richard de Tonbridge is the same is the WP article, and where Robert fits (sic) in? (Could Robert fitz Gilbert in fact be Richard fitz Gilbert, and hence all the same chap?) Ranmore (talk) 05:14, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Christian names were rarely interchanged at that point, suffixes were usually added (de/of ... (sometimes twice) fitz... or ...the younger/older). A typographical error in recording is conceivable but unlikely. Robert was a popular name at the time and I think recall other Robert fitz Gilbert records in extracts from the great book of 1086, which frequently made small errors as to names, it was mostly interested in money/assets. - Adam37 Talk 20:59, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
