Toponym

[edit]

The toponym Betanzos is of unknown origin but, due to its geographical situation in a very divided estuary, and the fact that it was ruled around 400 years by germanic people, sueves and goths, it seems probable that the origin comes from the germanic name of the estuary, based in the gothic word "beitans" (past participle of beitan), meaning biten or divided, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%F0%90%8C%B1%F0%90%8C%B4%F0%90%8C%B9%F0%90%8D%84%F0%90%8C%B0%F0%90%8C%BD#Gothic, and the germanic word "óss" meaning river mouth https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%C3%B3ss. --Ebanobre (talk) 23:49, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
