Bessarabia Germans
[edit]I don't know Editing Talks very well --- Correction: The Odessa region was settled first (circa 1804). Some of them, including my relatives, moved to Bessarabia later.
The Germans moved to the Volga River region in the late 1700's. Catherine the Great invited all of Europe. It was mostly Germans who moved to the Volga River region.
Catherine the Great's grandson made the same offer with some stipulations => needed to have an occupation, and needed to have a family. Those Germans moved to the Odessa region in the early 1800's.
As one example, a relative's kids were born in Odessa region from 1833 thru 1839. The rest of the kids were born in Bessarabia from 1841 thru 1853.
To obtain details, see => https://eisenbeisz.foxping.com/. Search the genealogy page for Bessarabia => results in more than 700 hits.

Immigration to U.S.
[edit]My great-grandparents were "Russian" Germans who emigrated to the U.S. from Bessarabia. My great-grandfather came from Borodino, my great-grandmother (whom I met once) from Rohrbach. According to family lore, they spoke Schwäbisch, so their forebears must have originated in Swabia. Great-grandma learned English, but her husband never did.
According to various things I've read, thousands of Germans from Bessarabia emigrated to the U.S. in the late 19th century —— many of them eventually settling in the Dakotas. My great-grandparents wound up in the tiny burg of Mercer, N.D. Perhaps a user who knows this history in more detail could add something to the article. Sca 02:05, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
My name is Chad Pfitzer. I served in Peace Corps (Moldova) from 2001-2003 and traveled to the former colony sites in Bessarabia (now Ukraine) to see where my Great Grandfather was been born prior to emmigrating to Java, SD. If anyone is interested in traveling to these sites I can give you some pointers. Feel free to contact me at chadpfitzer@yahoo.com .
To add to the list, my great-granparents also emigrated from Bessarabia to settle in Pick City, ND after WWII. I did not realize it was throughout the Dakotas until I found this page- good info! I have some documents on the subject, I will edit again if I find anything relevant. Bgriw (talk) 22:25, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Krasna
[edit]The Krasna mentioned in the article is now Krasne, Odessa Oblast, Ukraine. It was the second German colony in Bessarabia. It's coordinates are 46° 7'5.12"N, 29°14'46.06"E --Jbergquist (talk) 07:51, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
