request edit
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
My client Bertrand Piccard asks for changes to the Wikipedia page about him.
Opening paragraph
- Update the first sentence in the opening paragraph to ‘Bertrand Piccard FRSGS (born 1 March 1958) is a Swiss explorer, psychiatrist and environmentalist.’[1] This better reflects his occupations.
- In the opening paragraph, please change ‘co-pilot’ to ‘pilot’ as he and M. Borschberg never flew together. Technically ‘co-pilot’ is incorrect.
- He would also like for the introductory paragraph to mention his other activities. Please use this for second paragraph. ‘He is the Founder and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation, an environmental organization which aims to promote sustainable solutions to the climate crisis. He is Chairman of the Winds of Hope Foundation, which fights for the eradication of the Noma disease in Africa. The UN has called him ‘a tireless champion for sustainable energy and action on climate change.’[2]
Biography > Solar Impulse
- The first paragraph should say ‘Piccard began construction during 2007 and conducted brief test flights during 2009’ in the second sentence. The current sentence says he conducted test flights in 2008.
- Third paragraph, third sentence. ‘Originally conceived as a one-seater, the design of Solar Impulse was altered to allow two. The first intercontinental flight was made by Piccard and Borschberg together.’ This sentence is incorrect. The plane was never conceived to allow two pilots. Piccard and Borschberg took turns in the cockpit but never flew together. Please update to ‘The plane was conceived as a one-seater. Piccard and Borschberg took turns piloting Solar Impulse. The first intercontinental flight was made by Piccard.’
- The same paragraph should be updated in the last sentence, specifically the year from 2009 to 2006. It should say ‘By 2006, he had assembled a multi-disciplinary team of fifty specialists from six countries.’[3][4]
- Add this to the end of the same paragraph. ‘Among Piccard's most important flights were the Pacific crossing from Kalaeloa Airport, Hawaii to Moffett Field in California, and the Atlantic crossing from New York to Seville, each of which lasted more than 2 days.’[5][6]
- Add ‘flying 43’000km without fuel’[7] in first sentence of paragraph number 5.
- Change ‘International Committee of Clean Technologies’ to the correct title ‘World Alliance for Clean Technologies’.[8]
After Solar Impulse add a new subsection called Solar Impulse Foundation.
- This is the first paragraph in the new section. ‘Following his successful round-the-world solar flight with Solar Impulse, Bertrand Piccard launched the Solar Impulse Foundation. Its goal is to select innovative solutions to the environmental crisis and promote them to decision-makers in order to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy. To select these clean solutions, the Solar Impulse Foundation created the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label in May 2018.’
- This is the second paragraph. ‘This certification is attributed following a strict assessment process made by a pool of independent experts, and it recognizes both the economic profitability and environmental impact of products, processes and services. The Label is awarded to solutions which contribute to the achievement of one of the five Sustainable Development Goals related to water, energy, consumption and production, industry, cities and communities.’
- This is the third paragraph. ‘The goal of the Solar Impulse Foundation is to label 1000 clean and profitable solutions to the environmental crisis.’[9][10]
The Piccard Family
- Please use as an opening paragraph in The Piccard Family. ‘Several of Piccard's extended family were also explorers. His grandfather, Auguste Piccard, was a physicist, undersea explorer, and inventor of a helium-powered balloon that took him over 50,000 feet in 1931, making him the first person to enter the stratosphere and to see the Earth's curvature. Bertrand Piccard's father Jacques was the first to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean, along with US submarine lieutenant Don Walsh.’[11]
Awards and honours
Add the honours:
- Named a “Champion of the Earth” by the United Nations in 2012[2]
- UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador[12]

February 8 - Image Swap Request - Photo of Bertrand Piccard
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
- Explanation of issue: There's a new photo for Bertrand Picard in the Wikipedia Commons: [1]
- Information that can be added: Would someone be willing to change out the old photo Bertrand Piccard 2015.jpg in the infobox for the new one Bertrand Piccard L1001928 20x30 P.jpg?
Thanks very much!
Chaud321 (talk) 16:53, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
I switched out the photo and deleted the 2015 date since I assume the new photo is newer. The photo in the box is also used in the masthead, and the latter does not fit as well. If you know how to fix that do go ahead or instruct me. Mastimido (talk) 16:19, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
March 9 - Article inaccurately describes a one-seat plane as having two seats, flight is described in reverse
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
- Explanation of issue: This section under Solar Impulse inaccurately describes the flight as going backwards from Morocco to Switzerland, in a two-seater plane when the plane only had one seat. INACCURATE TEXT reads:
- During 2012, it made its first intercontinental flight from Morocco to Switzerland. Originally conceived as a one-seater, the design of Solar Impulse was altered to allow two. The first intercontinental flight was made by Piccard and Borschberg together.
- Information that can be added: Would someone be willing to swap out the inaccurate text for this sourced text from a National Geographic article? The NatGeo article with photographic evidence explains that they started in Switzerland and ended in Morocco and shows clear images of the one-seater cockpit. See below:

The World Alliance and 1000 Solutions Challenge[edit]Following the flight around the world, Piccard noted in a 2018 Smithsonian article that technologies developed for the solar-powered flight were already being repurposed in new ways, including new ceiling fans using the solar airplane engines and refrigerators using the cockpit insulation.[1] Leveraging the Solar Impulse platform as a starting point for interest in cleantech, Piccard founded the World Alliance for Clean Technologies, first announced in November 2016, to bring together for-profit companies creating green solutions.[1][2][3] Piccard said that he and his organization the Solar Impulse Foundation formed the World Alliance to help draw investors' and businesses' attention to new cleantech startups.[4] Piccard does not receive a salary for his leadership of the alliance, which is funded by donors including Air Liquide, Nestle and Solvay.[4] In November 2017 at COP23, Piccard tasked the World Alliance with a project to identify 1,000 technological solutions that are both profitable and good for the planet, with the goal to bring environmentalists and industrialists together.[1][5] Patrons of the initiative included Albert II, Prince of Monaco and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.[5] When speaking to government leaders, Piccard said he was consistently told that they wanted to protect the environment but it was too expensive.[6] To provide reassurance, in May 2018 Piccard with the Solar Impulse Foundation announced the Efficient Solutions Label, a certification involving a rigorous Ernst and Young-certified evaluation by independent experts to assess each solution's quality and ability to turn a profit.[4][6][7] According to Piccard, any Solar Impulse labeled solution must be the best in its class: the most environmentally friendly as well as economically viable and available for purchase today.[8] In 2021 in a Reuters interview Piccard stated that his organization had assembled a portfolio of 910 vetted and labeled solutions and expected to reach 1000 by mid-April 2021.[8] Piccard told Reuters he plans to discuss the solutions with businesses and governments, especially those in the process of funding the global economic recovery from COVID-19.[8] References

- I oppose this change in this article. This is not about Mr. Piccard, but about the Solar Impulse spin-off. It would rather belong in the Solar Impulse article, under Future Projects, which is where I edited it in. Ferkijel (talk) 13:19, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

The UN and the World Alliance[edit]Piccard was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment Programme in December 2015, partway through his solar flight around the world.[1] Four months after the completion of the flight, during the 2016 United Nations Climate Change Conference, Piccard and the Solar Impulse Foundation launched the UNEP-endorsed non-profit World Alliance for Clean Technologies.[2][3] The goal of the World Alliance is to identify 1,000 solutions that are good for the both the planet and the economy, supporting five of the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals: water, clean energy, industry, cities, and responsible consumption and production.[4][5] By January 2018 Piccard told the Economic Times that in his travels he had collected more than 500 ideas to protect the environment that were also profitable from a total of five continents.[6] In May 2018, Piccard and his Foundation announced the Efficient Solutions Label, a designation given to qualifying solutions after a four-week evaluation headed by World Alliance experts.[7] In 2021 Piccard told Forbes that the foundation had identified and certified 1000 solutions, profit-making for both companies and consumers.[8]
Hydrogen Car Record[edit]In 2019, Piccard set a record for the most miles driven by a hydrogen car without refueling, driving a Hyundai NEXO hydrogen-powered SUV for a total trip of 778 kilometers (483.4 miles) in Europe, with the goal to promote hydrogen technology.[9][10] The trip began November 25, 2019 at a France's first hydrogen station in Sarreguemines and ended November 26, 2019 at the Musée de l'air et de l'espace in Paris suburb Le Bourget, with a reported 49 kilometers (30.4 miles) of fuel leftover.[9][11][12] Destinations in Europe included Metz, Luxembourg, and Brussels.[13] Hyundai stated that several passengers joined Piccard in the vehicle for different legs of the trip, including French politician Jean Rottner, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, and H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.[11][13] Immediately after the trip, Piccard told Fuel Cells Works in an op-ed that he wanted to send the message that hydrogen-powered vehicles are a real and present-day option for consumers as hydrogen fuel stations become more commonplace.[14] He also said that battery-powered cars and fuel cell hydrogen cars should not be in competition because batteries are ideal for short distances and hydrogen for long distances.[14] The trip reportedly saved 111.2 kilograms of carbon dioxide compared to a similar journey in a gas-powered vehicle.[15] References
