Evans was born in Wolverhampton, England, but some secondary sources give the wrong information that he was born in Birmingham, England. There are several reasons why this may have happened. During Evans' lifetime and at the time of his death, some news articles emanating from Birmingham, where they were proud of him, said that he was born in Birmingham. This was a mistake easily made, since Evan's father and all his siblings were born in Birmingham, and the family lived there during most of his childhood. However, according to various censuses, Evans and his mother Sophia were born in Wolverhampton. Another possible cause of the error is that according to the General Record Office index, a second Bernard Evans (without the Walter) was born in the third quarter of 1843 in Birmingham, however that person pre-existed Evan's birthdate (shown in the GRO index as the fourth quarter of 1843), and the censuses later say that that other Bernard was a travelling salesman with different wife and parents. Various authoritative sources, including the British Museum, now agree that Bernard Walter Evans was born in Wolverhampton. I hope that the issue is now clear. Please do not remove the notes referring to censuses and BMD certificates in the Background section. That section is already fully supported by secondary sources. The notes are there to confirm the above information about birthplace and other issues, due to contradictory information in some secondary sources. Thank you for your patience in this matter.
