[edit]I deleted the last part of this sentence: He refused to abandon the race and four days later won a stage over Mont Ventoux, ultimately finishing ninth in the general classification. I believe he was hospitalized for several days after the head injury, so how could he have ranked in the GC? Did the directeurs perhaps make special allowance for him? Anyone who can help with this please comment or edit. BitQuirky 12:49, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Note sure. One list of his achievements [1] suggests he finished the Tour each year in 1970-1973, 1975, 1977 and 1980, abandoning in 1974, 1976, 1978. Is there a cite for this amnesia claim (being just a whippersnapper, I wouldn't recall 1970s Tours) Average Earthman 12:49, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I think the amnesia is well-known. I got the anecdote from Philippe Brunel, "An Intimate Portrait of the Tour de France." It's a neat book, but I think it's a little fuzzy on some things, particularly the English version. BitQuirky 14:14, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
