Requested move

[edit]

I can't find any modern sources in English that use the "Beornrad" spelling; I think this should be moved to Beornred of Mercia, which is currently a redirect. Mike Christie (talk) 16:38, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Date of death

[edit]

In The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Anglo-Saxon England (p. 528), Simon Keynes indicates that Beornred died in 769, but he does not elaborate.

After looking around for an explanation, I found something in Matthew Paris. He says that in 769, the town of Cataracta (Catterick) was burnt down by a tyrant called Beornred, who died in the flames (see here).

However, in the works of Symeon of Durham, the man responsible for this fire is named Earnred, not Beornred (see here).

I have not been able to find anything in the books I have at hand. Neither Kirby nor Yorke mention this event. Are there any secondary sources which could shed some light on this issue? – Swa cwæð Ælfgar (talk) 19:59, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
