Surname history

- Bendall; name / title given by William the conquerer to Germenic mercenaries hired to help fight the battle of 1066 against Harold King of England for their help in "putting an arrow in his eye" and thus defeating him. Meaning 'Bend, all' with reference to the bows used by said archers. This family were also given large amounts of land in Cambridgeshire as reward.
