My Edits Today (7/30/2010)
[edit]I spent some time today adding to, deleting from, and editing this entire article. I removed the section on "GPS issues" because I thought the issues discussed had more to do with the differences between adjusted and scaled coordinates (which I discussed earlier in the article) than with GPS use. I also compressed the "Where to Find 'Em" subsections into one overall section and added the railroad and private property warnings, two cautions often given to novice benchmark hunters. I myself have been hunting these things for about three years in the U.S., with maybe 150 reports to my credit (and perhaps 50 to NGS).
As far as I know, the FAQ section of the benchmark portion of the Geocaching.com website is the most authoritative place to find answers to specific benchmarking questions, and, by extension, more specific references for inclusion in this article, if desired.
I see that earlier editors were upset by a "U.S. bias" in the article. I left most of the U.K. references I found untouched, but it would be great if someone familiar with that system would drop by and expand these, rather than contracting the U.S. portion. :-) Sorry I can't help with this.Pgrig (talk) 20:55, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Needs serious work
[edit]The tags on the article have been there since 2013 at the latest. Besides a single citation in the lead, this article contains no references. It's time for someone to fine some reliable, secondary sources, or it is time to delete the article. I've heard of geocaching, but haven't heard of benchmarking, and I'm not yet convinced that it means WP:GNG. I'll try and remember to check back on this article when I have time. But seriously, the last talk page entry was over 10 years ago. This article is a mess. MrAureliusRTalk! 18:44, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
