History of Belfast Castle.
[edit]The 'History' section of this article should now be okay, as I have completely rewritten it, complete with proper academic references. Laggan Boy (talk) 09:14, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Actually, the only part of the 'History' section that I haven't rewritten is the part entitled 'Belfast Castle and Demesne since 1934'. Laggan Boy (talk) 13:25, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
Chapel of the Resurrection and Main Gate Lodge.
[edit]I have created two new 'subsections' in this article about the Chapel of the Resurrection and the Main Gate Lodge. Laggan Boy (talk) 09:09, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Sir John de Courcy
[edit]Professional historians have never been able to prove that the 'original' Belfast Castle was built on the orders of Sir John de Courcy. It is quite possible that de Courcy had the original castle built, but the documentary evidence is not there to prove this. Laggan Boy (talk) 12:18, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
Confusing article
[edit]This article conflates several castles into one building and one location, when in fact there were numerous fortifications over the century, with only final one surviving into the present day. This article needs to be broken up into the individual topics. It's too confusing as it is written ie the Norman castle has nothing to do with Lord Chichester's Plantation towerhouse. 150.143.66.165 (talk) 23:26, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
I think this article makes it very, very clear that there were several 'Belfast Castles' over the centuries. I think that is made very, very clear in this article. Laggan Boy (talk) 05:01, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
And, just to point out, the Plantation castle built for Lord Chichester was not a towerhouse. This, again, is made very clear in the article. Chichester's castle probably incorporated the remains of the Gaelic towerhouse of the Uí Néill dynasty into it. However, Chichester's castle was not a towerhouse. Laggan Boy (talk) 11:09, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
It is also incorrect to say that the Norman castle had nothing to do with Lord Chichester's later 'Plantation era' castle. There is the possibility that Chichester's castle was built on the same site as the Norman castle. There is the possibility that part of the foundations of the Norman castle were incorporated into Chichester's castle. As yet, we just don't know. Some archaeologists and historians think the Uí Néill towerhouse and, later, Chichester's castle were built on the same site as the Norman castle; other archaeologists and historians think the Uí Néill towerhouse and Chichester's castle were built on a different site from the Norman castle. Again, as yet, we just don't know for certain. Laggan Boy (talk) 18:11, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
