This page is described as a stub, needs more information. Reference to the official document authorizing such for US Navy ship commanding officers, is present. Could it be found out when that document was changed to authorize this. USS Nimitz, spend 144 days continuous at sea in 1979-1980 in the Indian Ocean. I believe that was start of US Navy policy of a aircraft carrier nearly always in the Indian Ocean. Due to the distance and travel time to a hospitable port for shore leave, I suspect was basis of starting this policy. Previously I suspect rarely did a US Navy ship stay at sea more than 45 days without a port call.
