Pronunciation?

[edit]

Bébé (bay-bay)? Beeb? Ummm... beh-beh? I have no idea, and it always kind of bugs me when I walk by the store, and I was kind of hoping wikipedia could tell me. Does someone want to do me a favour and add an accepted pronunciation (try to have some good reason for thinking yours is right.)

From Bebe FAQ [1] "Q: How do you pronounce the name of your company? What does bebe mean? A: It is pronounced "bee-bee." .. The name bebe was selected because it represented the philosophy of the time ("to be or not to be") as well as other multilingual meanings including the Persian name for the queen in a deck of cards and the Turkish word for woman."Jvandyke 03:06, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting from annual report..Sneaky POV

[edit]

The quoting is excessive and basically amounts to advertising. maxcap 01:22, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're deletions have been a bit excessive. Specifically, you've chosen to delete the notions that bebe:
  • targets a niche of fashion conscious 20-30 year old woman ("modern, sexy, sophisticated, body-conscious woman who takes pride in her appearance".)
  • using distinct visual ads ("edgy, high-impact, visual advertising campaigns"),
  • branded merchandise ("with the distinctive bebe logo to increase brand awareness.") and
  • integrated production techniques ("vertical integration") that enable
  • fast following of sales trends ("enables us to respond quickly to changing fashion trends"),
  • reduced capital via Just In Time inventory ("reduce risk of excess inventory"), and
  • quick replication of fashion trends ("produce distinctive quality merchandise")
  • that are ready-to-wear fashion "knock offs" of haute couture ("of exceptional value.").
I admit that I found it difficult to express these notions without referencing the annual report - hence my liberal use of quotes with the expectation that others would *improve* the content. Instead, you've simply *deleted* these notions! Thus, may I be so bold as to suggest that rather than deleting the above as POV, that you replace them with NPOV language? Jvandyke 17:38, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I was being bold! I think you've probably helped with the NPOV language with your criticisms of my edits. The only thing that might be tough to "neutralize" is the bit regarding the advertising.maxcap 18:10, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm having some trouble with this:
  • According to the 2005 Annual Report, the "vertical integration enables us to respond quickly to changing fashion trends, reduce risk of excess inventory, and produce distinctive quality merchandise of exceptional value."
The only way I can see to correct, it is doing this:
  • The 2005 Annual Report claims that "vertical integration enables us to respond quickly to changing fashion trends, reduce risk of excess inventory, and produce distinctive quality merchandise of exceptional value."
But that might be a bit weasely. Unless there is an independent source to back up the claims, it might be best to omit it. --maxcap 18:44, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an independent source, Newsweek, discussing the model of bebe stores (versus a t-shirt and jeans place such as the Gap (clothing retailer):
  • Already a crop of homegrown, West Coast-based fast-fashion companies including Bebe, Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe are taking the model to trend-conscious consumers... these pure fast-fashion companies tend to share several traits. First, they turn their inventory much faster than the average four to five times a year... translates into fewer markdowns—about 15 percent of fast-fashion items are sold on sale, versus an industry average of about 49 percent. That means higher profit margins. Bain estimates that the margins for the average fast-fashion retailer run about 16 percent, versus 7 percent for the typical specialty-apparel retailer. ... The trend is being fueled by younger consumers who are plugged into global trends... Fast-fashion stores need to be able to move products from the designing table to store shelves much faster than the norm.. The benefits of speed outweigh the cost in higher wages.. Mexico is "higher cost than Asia, but it saves three weeks' time, so it could make sense on certain trendier items," says Morgan Stanley analyst Gregory Melich... So what will it all mean for shoppers? Fewer sales, but hipper and equally cheap clothes."[2] Jvandyke 19:23, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect title?

[edit]

Why isn't the title to this article simply Bebe? In malls the store is called bebe, not bebe stores, so why is there a store in the title? --Vincentanton 18:20, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article title is correct. The parent company is 'bebe stores'. It operates the bebe, BEBE SPORT and 'bebe O' stores.Jvandyke 20:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I should add the the title should be 'bebe stores' (all lower case), not 'Bebe Stores' (uppercased first and second words). I'll correct.Jvandyke 20:49, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The title of the article is a violation of the WP:MOSTM guideline for article names and should be moved to Bebe stores (instead of relying on the initial cap redirection). 12.208.10.7 (talk) 03:07, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be some constant confusion over the capitalization of the store's name. The store's name is not legally ever capitalized, it is deliberately in every official document and scholarly reference to the store uncapitalized. The reasons for this is stated in the 'Name and Inception' section. I realize that this may seem unusual for most wikipedia editors here but it is incorrect and erroneous on the encyclopedia's part to capitalize the brand name in any instance. Ariadavid (talk) 06:39, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also for further example please see the company's 'About Us' section located on it's website at http://www.bebe.com/custserv/custservsection.jsp?pageName=About

Ariadavid (talk) 06:47, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ariadavid. Please take a look at this, which is part of our manual of style, something all articles should follow. It says, "For trademarks that are given in mixed or non-capitalization by their owners (such as adidas), follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules for proper nouns (in this case, Adidas). The mixed or non-capitalized formatting should be mentioned in the article lead, or illustrated with a graphical logo." The rules about the article title are slightly different, as you can see in the requested move below, but in the end that's supposed to be capitalized here too, I think. The article mentions that Bebe is stylized bebe, shows the lowercase logo, and uses uppercase in the text, like the manual of style suggests. So no, I don't think that it is "incorrect and erroneous" to use uppercase in the article. AgnosticAphid talk 07:03, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also see this, which has a bit more detail. In general, I think the idea is that if we use capital letters it's easier for readers because they're expecting to encounter a capital letter when they read a proper noun. But I'm not a Manual of Style expert. AgnosticAphid talk 07:19, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps exception should be made with this article given that it explains in the 'Name' section that the name is never capitalized but the way it's currently written is capitalized in the same sentence explaining that it's not. This is an obvious contradiction and will only confuse future readers. I could agree with keeping it capitalized in the title but I'm not so sure about the entire article. Fair use rationale for Image:Gn logo bebe a.gif

[edit]

Image:Gn logo bebe a.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Neda Mashouf

[edit]

It would be appropriate to discuss Neda Mashouf's role in creating the Bebe look and in the success of the company.

Bebe storesBebe Stores – The official spelling is "bebe stores", but on Wikipedia, "Bebe Stores" must be used, since MOS:TM states the following: "Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules, even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting "official," as long as this is a style already in use, rather than inventing a new one". Indeed, "Bebe Stores" is already in use, as can be seen here and here. Trinitresque (talk) 02:48, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
