The referenced opponent to beauty pageants seems not to exist. Also, the criticism section seems biased against critics of beauty pageants. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Urkelman (talk • contribs) 05:04, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Miss World
is this different to Miss World -- or another name for the same thing?
- Same meat different gravy. I.e. Format virtually identical but different sponsers etc..
- Since the article (which needs a bit of NPOVing) is now about more than one beauty contest (Miss World and Miss Universe) I'm moving it to bahahahahahahah i like changing the pages... ahahahahaaBeauty Contest. -- Someone else 23:18 Nov 23, 2002 (UTC)
Men
Is there ANY "beauty contest" for men that refers to itself as such? Is there ANY (serious) beauty contest in which men and women actually compete against each other? They are certainly the exceptions! -- Someone else 08:14 Nov 25, 2002 (UTC)
Another one
Another one, Cecilia Bolocco of Chile, 1987's winner, is married to former.
Former what? --rmhermen
Redirects
I think the redirection of Miss Universe and Miss World to this page is wrong. To be a proper resource of information these pages should list previous winners, like other pages about past holders of titles. I can't be arsed to do it myself though. Mintguy 22:58 Dec 8, 2002 (UTC)

Scandal
Wasn't there some sort of scandal a while back in the child pageant circut - parents dolling up baby/little boys as baby girls?

There was the murder of JonBenet Ramsay, pageant queen, which caused a stir a few years ago. And the whole kiddie pageant thing is controversial, yes -- Tarquin 14:59 Feb 7, 2003 (UTC)

Black Miss World?
Think the list is inaccurate here. I seem to recall that there was a Miss Grenada who became Miss World before 1977. Can't say more--I think such things are silly. Quill 04:15, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
to be written ?
Shouldn't the "to be written"-stuff be here instead of on the page? Or am I just misunderstanding how wikipedia works?
Beaty-contests: project
Yo people, I'm doing a project, does any one have any info on beaty contests or any commments,? thanks
Keynsian Beauty Contest
In economic theory there is also something called the Keynsian beauty contest, I believe there should be a link (maybe disambiguation) somewhere but do not know how to do it. --213.6.36.74 09:18, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Race
The race and beauty contests section (or whatever it's called) has no explanation of its importance or relevance to the rest of the article, and it uses povy words to describe people, and race is a povy concept to begin with. I just don't think this belongs here. Dave 03:28, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Does anyone have information on pageants without a swimsuit competition?
The National American Miss pageant, American Co-ed pageant, and Miss America's Outstanding Teen do not have swimsuit competitions.
Criticism
I deleted this sentence: "Beauty Pageants, or contests, can have very harmful effects on the people involved and those who watch.". I think it should only be included if the "very harmful effects" are verified by a reputable source. The rest of the article needs to cite sources too, but I think this sentence in particular should not be included without a reference. And I do not think there is any need to keep restating that pageants are also called contests throughout the article. Crana 15:32, 28 April 2007 (UTC) hey i need help im doing an article on why its bad that beauty pageants under that age of 16... please write me back my email is beandip0o0@yahoo.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.85.118.85 (talk) 22:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC) you botz
Child abuse
I deleted the "Little Miss" link and changed it to "Little Miss". Nothing on the page "child abuse" talks about "Little Miss" anything and I don't understand the purpose or utility of having the link like this. Could someone explain? It has been changed back and I have left it but I would like to understand the reason for having it that way. Crana 13:39, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

New Page for Child Beauty Contests?
I was thinking that since there are significant differences between the adult and child beauty contests (particularly in the types of criticism that each encounter), and the child beauty contest seems to be underrepresented, it might be a good idea to make a separate page for child beauty contests (or at least a sub-heading). I just wanted to make sure that I'm not missing it before I make a new page.

Subjective
There is a common criticism that these contests detract from the subjective nature of beauty. This is a significant criticism, but I don't have the time to fix the article. Pink Floyd 00:17, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Nun contest
I added this since this is a landmark in this kind of contest and not really religious but cultural and so human.[1]--Florentino floro (talk) 12:30, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
"Sexual Purity" section
This section of the article uses terminology, such as "moral turpitude," which make it sound like it is from the last century. An even bigger problem, though, is that at the end of the section it makes it sound like either all contestants take nude pictures or that the contest organizers are those who have the nude pictures. At the very least, it is unclear. I'm going to go ahead an update the terminology a bit and try to fix the issue with the end as well. Additionally, I'm going to remove the quotation marks which don't belong unless a) we are using a term ironically or loosely (frowned upon by the MLA board, but used in common parlance) or b) we are quoting someone. --Cromwellt | Talk 19:48, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Hi folks, In view of the upcoming Jon Benet Ramsey trial and media frenzy, I wanted to request that Wikipedia try to have sections of this Beauty Pageant article on "Child Beauty Pageants" and on "Teen Beauty Pageants," as well as on the adult pageants. My understanding is that parents have a choice: they can try to send their kid to West Point, they can hope for a college Sports scholarship, or they can enter their kid into beauty pageants and hope that they win a scholarship and that the training in modelling will pay off. So the children train and the teens and adults collect the scholarships and the money from modelling. But I am not sure that this view--based on an old episode of CBS "60 Minutes" from many many years ago--is right. Please do what you can to look into this.
As for sexual purity, I believe that the goal of the pageants is to make sure that the winners win a big enough pot of money that they will not have to turn to pornography. So instead of seeing this in terms of sexual purity, I would prefer to see it in terms of economics. Thanks!
- Are there notable sources for this perspective (last paragraph above) though? It seems very surprising - must everyone who is not a model starve to death? Must every participant who doesn't reach #1 destined for porn? I'd like to see some relevant sources.94.5.30.178 (talk) 20:48, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
Language vs. Beauty
Do these have to be mutually exclusive? Did a beauty contest contestant write this sentence??: "A beauty contest, or beauty pageant, competition based mainly, though not always entirely, on the physical beauty of its contestants, and often incorporating personality, talent demonstration, and question responses as judged criteria."
Not to mention: "...however it is thought that this opposition is only due to her jealousy as she lacks the required qualities according to english newspaper, The Sun."
and "Another would be the former Miss Ohio USA Halle Berry won won an Oscar for "Monsters Ball."
Ok. I'm fixing these.

Needs attention from an expert good at writing
Unfortunately, I think there aren't many experts on the history of beauty pageants. The article also seems to have a bias towards the US and recentism (were the beauty pageants in the US the first in known world history?). The writing is also unclear in many places, like this paragraph which explodes my mind: "In the 1940s, women had this “wannabe” caricature of having the “correct” stereotype, anxieties, and desires. Women strived to be perfect, not accepting anything else. The middle-class cultural style was rejected. They had different types of everything from the men. They had access to only certain jobs, and compensation for work. Nothing was readily available to them like the luxury men had." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.5.30.178 (talk) 21:13, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
The article's infomation on the first pageants in the United States are incorrect. The first pageant was in the 1920's, not the 1960's. It was put on by a hotel owner, looking to boost tourism after labor day. This pageant later become known as the Miss America pageant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.182.174.151 (talk) 22:35, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
