An alternative theory is that the name originates in the Welsh Borders. See the Wikipedia entry for Bacheldre. This theory is consistent with the fact that UK census data shows concentrations of the surname Beaman around Shropshire and neighbouring border counties. If the name originated from Beaumont, for instance it is mooted that a serf might have taken his Lord's name when surnames became a requirement, then there would be a geogrpahical correspondence between (a) the areas where the French Lords with the name 'Beaumont' were settled (b) concentrations of the surname Beaumont especially in the early census and (c) Beaman's, beman's & Beamand's etc. In fact there is not.
